Summer’s still here, but things are already heating up as we close out the season and enter a busy fall. That’s because flagship phone season is officially upon us, with several marquee devices tipped to launch soon.

Two of the most exciting are arguably the iPhone 18 Pro Max and Google Pixel 11 Pro XL. The latter’s expected to arrive first, with the next Made by Google event slated for August 12. Meanwhile, Apple’s roadmap isn’t as clearly defined. Rumors suggest Apple could break from tradition by staggering the reveals of its iPhone 18 lineup — releasing the 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max first during its typical September event, followed by the standard iPhone 18 later on.

Below, I’ll break down all the latest details and rumors surrounding the iPhone 18 Pro Max and Pixel 11 Pro XL so you know what both flagships have to offer — and ultimately, which one I'm most excited about.

iPhone 18 Pro Max vs. Pixel 11 Pro XL: Rumored specs

iPhone 18 Pro Max vs. Pixel 11 Pro XL: Price and release date

Both flagships are trending toward higher starting price tags, with Google reportedly bumping its entry point to $1,299 while doubling base storage to 256GB. Even though that represents a $100 price hike over the Pixel 10 Pro XL, getting double the storage helps soften the blow.

Meanwhile, Apple has maintained a $1,199 starting price for the last few generations, but the iPhone 18 Pro Max is rumored to get a price bump — with analyst estimates pointing to $1,299, and possibly as high as $1,399.

Based on the rumors the iPhone 18 Pro Max would go on sale September 18, which would be about a week after the rumored Apple event on September 9th. The Made by Pixel event is August 12th, and the new Pixel 11 Pro series has an expected release date of August 20th.

iPhone 18 Pro Max vs. Pixel 11 Pro XL: Design and display

Apple is expected to keep the display size unchanged for the iPhone 18 Pro Max, but its 6.9-inch panel could feature one major upgrade: a smaller, much more discreet Dynamic Island cutout. Reports suggest Apple has found a way to move key Face ID components under the glass, allowing the display cutout itself to shrink.

One of the most underrated improvements Apple recently made to its displays was adding an advanced anti-reflection coating that does a far better job of minimizing glare. Having tested this feature firsthand against competing phones, we expect the iPhone 18 Pro Max to get the same treatment.

Since Apple gave the lineup a massive visual overhaul last generation with a wider camera plateau on the back, we don't anticipate any drastic design changes this year. However, the iPhone 18 Pro Max is rumored to be the heaviest iPhone yet due to a larger capacity battery. While the overall aesthetic will remain largely familiar, fresh color options — with Dark Cherry, Light Blue, and Silver-Gray rumored for the lineup — could still give buyers a reason to upgrade.

Google has carved out a distinct design identity for its phones, and that overall aesthetic is unlikely to change drastically with the Pixel 11 Pro XL — meaning it will likely keep the same elongated, pill-shaped camera island, rounded corners, and flat edges.

One of the more intriguing rumors involves a new addition on the back alongside those cameras, referred to as the "Pixel Glow." This multicolored light array is reportedly designed to animate and change colors based on notifications, though it remains to be seen whether it will offer any extra utility beyond basic visual alerts.

Display leaks have been sparse so far, but the Pixel 11 Pro XL screen is expected to remain at 6.8 inches. It's worth noting that the Pixel 10 Pro XL already features one of the brightest panels on the market, peaking at an impressive 2,555 nits. Google could up the ante even further to improve outdoor visibility under direct sunlight.

iPhone 18 Pro Max vs. Pixel 11 Pro XL: Cameras

I really enjoy taking photos with the iPhone 17 Pro Max and Pixel 10 Pro XL, but Apple’s flagship ultimately came out on top in my head-to-head camera testing. While the rumored camera specs of the iPhone 18 Pro Max appear identical on paper — a triple 48MP setup with a 4x optical zoom telephoto lens — it's reportedly getting upgraded Sony sensors.

On top of that, a variable aperture system is rumored to finally debut on this model. This would give users direct control over physical depth of field and exposure, making it easier to naturally blur backgrounds or create silky long-exposure effects on flowing water.

Even though the Pixel 10 Pro XL fell slightly behind its rival overall, its telephoto performance surprised me the most. That’s promising, as early leaks hint that the Pixel 11 Pro XL could achieve an even longer 120x max zoom.

Combined with enhancements to Pro Res Zoom, it could widen the gap over the iPhone in long-range shooting. I also expect new image processing algorithms to further boost the Pixel 11 Pro XL’s photo output, especially in low light.

iPhone 18 Pro Max vs. Pixel 11 Pro XL: Performance

We could be entering a new era with the iPhone 18 Pro Max and Pixel 11 Pro XL, as both flagships are rumored to transition to a cutting-edge 2-nanometer manufacturing process. Google’s Tensor processors have trailed Apple's silicon for as long as I can remember, but the Tensor G6 could finally prove to critics that Google can build a serious contender.

Reportedly manufactured on TSMC's 2nm node, the Tensor G6 could feature a revamped seven-core CPU layout. This architectural leap should boost peak performance while significantly improving thermal and power efficiency.

Meanwhile, the iPhone 18 Pro Max is bound to be a performance juggernaut, especially with rumors pointing to a 2nm build for its A20 Pro chip. Given the impressive benchmark scores delivered by the A19 Pro, this node shrink suggests even greater generational gains for Apple's top flagship.

In order to keep those speeds sustained, the iPhone 18 Pro Max may also introduce a redesigned stainless-steel vapor chamber. While that cooling mechanism might contribute to a heavier phone overall, it should give the iPhone 18 Pro Max the ability to handle processor-intensive tasks and heavy gaming without throttling.

iPhone 18 Pro Max vs. Pixel 11 Pro XL: Battery and charging

Over the past year, we've seen outstanding battery endurance across the board, but according to our lab testing, Google still has more to prove than Apple. While early leaks pointed to a capacity drop down to 5,000 mAh, a more recent leak suggests the Pixel 11 Pro XL will pack a 5,115 mAh battery. That's still technically smaller than the Pixel 10 Pro XL's cell, meaning any battery life improvements will hinge heavily on the power efficiency of the Tensor G6.

Charging speeds for the Pixel 11 Pro XL are expected to remain unchanged at 45W wired and 25W wireless. And after the previous generation finally introduced magnetic wireless charging via PixelSnap, I expect that standard to return here as well.

Meanwhile, the iPhone 18 Pro Max is expected to be the heaviest model to date — a trade-off largely attributed to a massive 5,567 mAh capacity spotted in recent regulatory filings. Paired with the efficiency gains of the new 2nm A20 Pro chip, Apple’s flagship could deliver substantial battery life improvements.

When it comes to charging, the iPhone 18 Pro Max may simply inherit its predecessor's specs, though rumors suggest wired charging could see a slight bump to 45W to put it on par with Google, while 25W MagSafe support will almost certainly return.

iPhone 18 Pro Max vs. Pixel 11 Pro XL: Software and AI

Having tested the iOS 27 beta for a while now — including early access to the revamped Siri AI — I'm confident the software experience on the iPhone 18 Pro Max will feel smooth and familiar. From overall interface speed and responsiveness to helpful everyday additions like custom Wallet passes and an updated Camera app, there's a lot to look forward to when the final release arrives.

iOS 27 also packs plenty of Apple Intelligence features. My favorite so far is Reframe, which uses AI to adjust photo perspectives after capture. Siri is also far more conversational thanks to improved contextual understandin and I’ve come to rely on it much more while driving with CarPlay. Plus, just like with other AI chatbots, I really appreciate that all my past interactions are saved and searchable inside the dedicated Siri app.

Apple has made tremendous strides in the AI race, but Google still holds the crown. While Android 17 will launch alongside the Pixel 11, it’s still unclear what exclusive software capabilities will accompany the rollout. Gemini has already proven to be the most capable assistant on any smartphone, seamlessly handling complex multimodal tasks — like placing a Dunkin' order for me through DoorDash.

I’m eager to test the new Gemini Intelligence features Google showcased at The Android Show: Google I/O Edition, especially given the deeper integrations coming to Android Auto. It remains to be seen what additional tools Google will keep exclusive to the Pixel 11 Pro XL, but one thing is certain: Google continues to set the bar for AI on smartphones, and I expect the Pixel 11 Pro XL will only cement that lead.

iPhone 18 Pro Max vs. Pixel 11 Pro XL: Outlook

The battle between the iPhone 18 Pro Max and the Pixel 11 Pro XL is the matchup I'm looking forward to the most, with both manufacturers targeting major hardware and software upgrades.

Apple is focusing heavily on physical refinement and optical versatility. With rumored features like a mechanical variable-aperture main sensor, 2nm A20 Pro chip, stainless-steel vapor chamber, and a massive 5,567 mAh battery, the iPhone 18 Pro Max is positioning itself as an absolute hardware powerhouse.

Google, on the other hand, should continue to focus its efforts on what it does best: deeper AI integration. The Pixel 11 Pro XL's transition to a 2nm Tensor G6 chip could finally deliver the sustained performance that previous Tensor chips lacked. Throw in an extended 120x zoom range, system-level Gemini AI features that Apple still can't match, and perhaps a novel “Pixel Glow” notification tool, and Google makes a compelling case for the flagship crown.
