Dyson just released an air purifier with a very clever feature — and here’s why I can’t wait to try it

Dyson is well-known for making air treatment products from stylish purifiers to wearable fans. In fact, the Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool HP07 held the top spot amongst the best air purifiers we’ve ever tested for a seriously impressive stint. While the 3-in-1 hybrid cools down and cleans the air in the room, as well as offers top notch heating, Dyson’s latest design comes with a futuristic twist that I’m really excited about.

Introducing the Dyson Find+Follow Purifier Cool. And you'll find the hint of its very clever feature hidden in plain sight – the purified air will find you and it will follow you.

Using AI technology, it intelligently tracks you when you’re in the room and even when you’re not – automatically stopping the smart oscillation when you leave. Genius. For now, it's just launched in the U.K. for £549.99 at Dyson. In the U.S., Find+Follow launches early June and will be priced at $849.99.

The Dyson Find+Follow Purifier Cool is an air purifier and fan in one. But what's really cool about it is that it'll project the air wherever you go, using intelligent airflow that follows you. It eliminates the need for manual adjustment and will even share the purified air if there are multiple people in the room.

Clean air finds you

For all intents and purposes, the Dyson Find+Follow looks and acts like other Dyson air purifiers already on the market. It uses HEPA filtration, keeps you cool, and has a modern design that's in-keeping with the rest of the brand's products. But, it’s the technology packed inside it that really makes it stand out.

With AI intelligent sensing, it figures out where you are in the room, whether sitting down, standing up, or even moving around, and projects the purified air towards you without you needing to do a thing. It can even detect and respond to multiple people in a room at one time, splitting the air efficiently and evenly.

As Omer Ali, Senior Dyson Engineer, explains: “We designed the Dyson Find+Follow Purifier Cool to respond to real human behavior. You shouldn’t need to manually adjust your fan for comfort. With Find+Follow air projection, the machine automatically oscillates and directs airflow to the person – even as they move to different areas of the room, so you can enjoy consistent comfort without constantly repositioning the product.”

AI, no problem

While I’m excited to try it out, I wondered whether the use of AI in this latest product would have any impact on your privacy. Fortunately, as far as Dyson is concerned, your identity is safe. While the Dyson Find+Follow Purifier Cool is tracking you with an AI vision system that uses a 17-key point user detection technology, it’s noting how you move, not who you are. So, Dyson states: “Identity is never detected or stored.”

Expanding on this, it explains that while images are being taken, they’re immediately deleted. While I love the idea of having an AI technology know exactly where I am to provide me the best air, I certainly don’t want it uploading photos of me wandering around my home and thankfully, that's not the case here.

Other fun features include a Night Mode that’s 50% quieter than the usual operating mode and it's all easily controlled via the MyDyson app. While Dyson launched the Dyson Purifier Cool PC1 last year, it’ll only cost you just £349.99 at Dyson right now, which is £200 cheaper. Whether the intelligent technology is an added feature that's worth the extra money, I'll have to wait and see when we put it to the test.
