They have a "complicated" relationship but are soon forced to work together to track down the killer (aka Fox) who has infiltrated the building. And that's not all.

Simultaneously, the Director-General of MI5, Madeline Delaney (Lesley Sharp), is onboard a government jet that will explode if it turns back to Washington DC, changes course or descends below 20,000ft. 'Red Eye' season 2 — Episode guide [*SPOILER ALERT*]

Season 02 Episode 01: Eighteen months after Russia is blamed for shooting down a new D-300 cargo plane over the Atlantic, DS Hana Li is summoned to investigate the murder of a US diplomatic courier at Heathrow. The head of US Embassy Security, Clay Brody, with whom Hana shares a complicated past, tells her that the courier’s diplomatic bag and ID were stolen. Hana’s investigation leads her to the US Embassy where the new US Ambassador, Ronald Tillman (Trevor White) is hosting a party. Realising that the killer (aka Fox) has infiltrated the building, Hana and Brody hunt Fox to the Ambassador’s office where they find he has killed an agent and vanished into the secret tunnels. Simultaneously, onboard a government jet from Washington DC, Director General Madeline Delaney and Defence Secretary Alex Peterson (Nicholas Rowe) receive a Russian threat to blow up their jet. They cannot turn back or change course and if they drop below 20,000ft the bomb will self-detonate.

S02 E02: When Fox threatens to blow up the jet if anyone leaves the US embassy, it becomes clear that Delaney and Hana are looking for the same Russian assassin. Compelled to lockdown the embassy but refusing to worry his important guests, Ambassador Tillman secretly traps them inside with a killer. With state-of-the-art security, Brody is convinced he doesn’t need Hana’s help. But when the courier’s missing bag is found, not only do they learn that Fox has changed his appearance but also that he’s set a trap to take out all of the embassy surveillance. Working blind and with Hana the only person to have seen Fox’s face, Brody is now forced to let her lead the hunt. Meanwhile, a Russian laptop is located onboard, leaving Delaney and Peterson to carefully determine if it’s the actual bomb. And, with the embassy guests unaware that they are even in a lockdown, Fox kills his first unsuspecting victim, from a hit-list that contains a handful of targets.

S02 E03: Tensions rise between Hana, Brody and Ambassador Tillman over whether the guest was murdered or had a drunken accident. But when Fox murders his second victim, there is no doubt that Hana was right and Fox is targeting specific guests. John Tennant (Jonathan Aris), Delaney’s rival from season one, is brought in by the Prime Minister to run operations at Thames House where Megan discovers that both victims testified in DC and that a Russian submarine shot down the Samson D-300. Delaney, Hana, and Brody force Tillman and Peterson, who also testified, to explain why they blamed the Russians rather mechanical error for the D-300 crash. Delaney isn’t convinced, especially when she learns that an engineer, who filed a complaint about the plane, suspiciously committed suicide a day after the crash. Wanting more answers, Hana heads up to Tillman’s office, only to find herself in a lift with Fox. A ride she may not survive.

S02 E04: After surviving her fight with Fox, Hana is haunted by the question of why he let her live, and a clue from the encounter makes Brody suspect that Russia isn’t behind the murders. Digging deeper, Megan discovers that a guest at the party has a personal vendetta against each victim. Banks goes to interview the widow of the D-300 engineer who committed suicide and runs into journalist Jess Li (Jemma Moore). Forced to make an unconventional pact to expedite the investigation, they uncover a crucial piece of evidence that leads them into a deadly conflict with military police. Meanwhile, Delaney and Peterson follow bomb disposal instructions to try to defuse the bomb themselves. Relializing, they can’t diffuse it, Peterson suggests a way to trick the device. It’s a dangerous move but if they don’t prove they can land the jet, the PM will shoot them down before they reach England.

S02 E05: Peterson’s ‘hail mary’ plan works and, landing safely, they are about to disembark, when Fox demands they remain on board. Knowing that he’s the target, Peterson negotiates the release of Delaney and the others if he remains. With Banks on the brink of death, Jess enlists the help of an old friend who operates on his kitchen table and manages to stabilise Ruth. Jess is able to get the crucial evidence to Thames House, where Delaney pieces together the last night of the dead engineer’s life. Having uncovered why Fox didn’t kill her, Hana and Brody decide to turn the tables and engineer a trap to catch him. During their stakeout, they finally have a chance to reflect on their complicated past, but Fox outwits them and has a different agenda, Brody reveals a shocking secret about his past, something that turns Hana against him and leaves Brody in handcuffs. Having given them the slip and taken a guest hostage, Fox pulls off his most daring murder yet. When Fox checks back in with his employer, the architect behind the murders is revealed.

S02 E06: In flashback, the actions and motives of the conspiracy’s chief architect are revealed. As the embassy is evacuated, Brody breaks free of his cuffs and helps Hana capture Fox and retrieve the detonator for the bomb on the jet. However, a standoff with embassy security provides Fox with an opportunity to escape. Hana and Brody recover a vital piece of evidence that Fox stole from the Ambassador's office and they escape the embassy to deliver it to Delaney. At Thames House, the evidence reveals the critical event that put the conspiracy in motion, and identifies the true villain to Delaney, Hana and Brody. Delaney hatches a daring plan to deliver justice and, the following day, the trap is set. But things go wrong and, at great personal cost, Brody confronts the main villain in a desperate attempt to extract a confession, and Hana and Fox fight to the death for a second and final time.

'Red Eye' season 2 - FAQ

What has Jing Lusi (who plays Hana Li) said about "Red Eye" season 2?

Why do you think series one did so well?

I think it was just so different from what people are used to seeing! Agatha Christie on a plane? It was very ambitious. It was on a level to what people are used to seeing in American stuff on British terrestrial TV on a Sunday night... it was a different ball game.

How did you feel to reprise the role of Hana?

I was super excited and delighted. I obviously hoped there would be more after we wrapped Season 1, but I also said, “Let’s come back if there’s a story, let’s not come back for the sake of it.” When [I heard the concept for season 2], I thought, “Wow this is ambitious! I can't wait to see how that plays out!”

What can you tell us about the case she’s investigating?

At the beginning, it seems like quite a simple case of a diplomatic courier coming back from America, being found dead in the men's toilets at Heathrow. Hana is called in, on her birthday of all days – because she’s a workaholic – to investigate, and that is when she meets Brody who suspects it could be foul play.

What drives Hana?

Hana has a very strong moral compass with a strong inbuilt bullsh*t detector. When someone is not being truthful, it makes her think, “Why? What are you hidin?” It makes her more curious. She's very much a pursuer of truth and justice.

Do you share any qualities with Hana?

Yes, we're very similar in our tenacity in a ‘dog with a bone’ kind of way. If I've made up my mind about something, then that's just going to be how it is, and it needed to have happened yesterday. I’m also very impatient. So, I definitely resonate with that in Hana. She doesn’t like waiting. It’s probably one of the reasons they cast me! No acting needed.
