The two mothers here are from very different backgrounds - Lorna (played by Carmen Ejogo) is a self-made Black businesswoman from South London who has worked her way up to huge property in Richfield; Juliet (Eve Best) was born with a silver spoon in her mouth - but their daughters - Grace (Imogen Faires) and Allegra (Amelia May) respectively - are best friends.
The mother/ daughter relationships are central here but so is the pernicious influence of social media and how outsiders like the mysterious Gigi (Nicôle Lecky - who is also the writer of the show) can expose the fault lines everywhere. Episode 6 is called "I Don’t Put Anything Past Teenage Girls" and the privileged assumption that the rules don't apply is ultimately what has brought such jeopardy to Richfield.

Season 01 Episode 01: "Lewd Videos" - Life appears perfect in Richford Lake for super-mum turned author Juliet Lonsdale and self-made businesswoman Lorna Gibbons until their daughters Grace and Allegra are accused by their school of filming a provocative video. The girls deny it, but it’s clear they’re lying, and we realise that scandal, danger and intrigue sit just beneath the surface of this perfect town.
S01 E02: "Girls Are More Responsible, and She Has Her Credit Card" - Juliet’s night-time secret forces her into a dangerous lie, and Lorna confronts the past she has been hiding from Grace. The girls ramp up the app with shocking results, and Iris is missing. Gigi hosts an event that takes a dark turn when the police show up.
S01 E03: "Call It Mother’s Intuition or Whatever" - As the police hunt for Iris, the mothers refuse to listen to Lorna’s concerns about what the girls are up to. Juliet falls out with Lorna and gets closer to an enigmatic Gigi, while Allegra does a secret deal with K Rizz. The app gets more dangerous, with serious consequences as a photo circulates.
S01 E04: "This Town Is Turning Me Crazy" - Lorna fights to get Grace back into school, whilst news of explicit photos on the net shocks the community. Allegra tries to help Grace, but her plan backfires. The parents have a showdown at a wild party hosted by Gigi, where dark forces are at play. And tragedy strikes Richford Lake.
S01 E05: "Why Should We Be the Ones Shamed" - The town comes together in the wake of tragedy. As Grace and Allegra are questioned, will mothers and daughters lie to protect themselves? Lorna and Steven become closer when she finally reveals the truth of her past, but Juliet’s life falls apart when Gigi comes to dinner.
S01 E06: "I Don’t Put Anything Past Teenage Girls" - The net closes in on Grace and Allegra, while Juliet and Lorna make a shocking discovery. Gigi’s secret is blown, and at Frances’s party, the terrible truth is finally revealed.
What has Nicôle Lecky (Showrunner and actor who plays Gigi) said about her show, "Wild Cherry"?
What is Wild Cherry about?
Wild Cherry is about mothers and daughters. When a scandal happens in their prestigious school, these mothers and daughters turn against each other in the town. There’s a lot of mystery and intrigue.
What inspired you to write Wild Cherry?
One of the reasons I wrote Wild Cherry is because I used to drive through this private gated community in Surrey. There are a few of those places, and I would look at these beautiful homes and mansions and think, "Who lives there?" So, I really wanted to tell a story about towns like this. I felt like we hadn't seen this side of England before. I also knew I wanted to explore mothers and daughters and their relationships. And I thought, what better place to do it than in a town where people have so much access to privilege, wealth, and money, and yet they're still faced with the same issues. So that was my inspiration and the jumping-off point.
How has it been working as a writer, executive producer, and actor? How do you juggle all that?
I think maybe it's not as unique anymore, but being a showrunner, writing and executive-producing the entire series is already a big role.
To make it even more fun (or harder!), I was also acting in the show, playing Gigi. It's a lot. You're focused on what the other cast are doing, what they're wearing, having meetings with the director about production design, locations etc so it's all-consuming.
But I'm so passionate about the story, the show, and the women in the show. You have your late nights, but hopefully it’s all worth it and people love the show.
What do you want audiences to feel or take away from watching Wild Cherry?
What was key for me was just telling a story and letting the audience come to it naturally. For me, nothing in the show is linear. None of the women are bad. None of the women are good. They make terrible decisions and choices and I think that's realistic in the modern world we live in, whether it’s because of social media, female friendships, or other pressures.
There's often this sense that women are railing against each other, but as the show progresses, you start to realize they’re actually railing against the establishment. There are external forces putting pressure on them. The question is: Can you ever really overcome or overthrow that? Can you push back against that kind of oppression?
By the time you get to episode six, the women make choices that raise questions: Were they pushed to it? Was it always within them? That’s for the audience to think about.
What else can I watch on BBC iPlayer?
Lots – including "Return to Paradise" season 2, "Hope Street", "Once Upon a Time in Space", "Mary at 90: A Lifetime of Cooking", "In My Own Words: Frederick Forsyth" and "The Ridge".
