Olympic champion Garnbret was pipped to the Lead title by Ai Mori in Bern, but she isn't competing in Seoul. Instead, World Cup series winner Erin McNeice (G.B.) and Korean star-on-the-rise Seo Chae-hyun stand in Garnbret's way. Schubert took Lead gold in Bern but has since been eclipsed by Alberto Gines Lopez (Spain), who made all six World Cup podiums this season and won the overall title. Then there's Olympic champion Toby Roberts (G.B,), who's had a wildly inconsistent year, and winner of three World Cups Sorato Anraku (Japan).
Garnbret did, however, take Bouldering gold in Bern and although she only competed in the discipline at one World Cup event this year, she won it — albeit after a shaky start. Olympic silver medalist Oriane Bertone (France) took the overall title. Mickael Mawem has retired since his Bouldering victory in Bern, opening the door to World Cup winner Anraku, runner-up and Bern silver medalist Mejdi Schalck (France), plus local star Lee Dohyun and Roberts.
With Indonesian star Desak Dewi not in Seoul and Matteo Zurloni (Italy) completely out of sorts following their Speed triumphs in Bern, it's hard to look past World Cup series winners Emma Hunt (U.S.) and Kiromal Katibin (Poland). However, this particular competition is as much as sprint as a marathon, and Miroslaw's quest to break the 6s barrier is the No.1 story.
