Qatar, under the tutelage of Julen Lopetegui, are the standout favorites, with Saudi Arabia likely to be their closest challengers, not least because their veteran skipper Salem Al-Dawsari is in the midst of an extended Indian summer. The 34-year-old has been giving Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema a run for their money in the Saudi Pro League.
The North African nations have opted to field weakened teams ahead of AFCON, but will expect to make deep runs regardless. Reigning champions Algeria couldn't resist selecting a couple of big guns in Islam Slimani and Yacine Brahimi, the second-top scorer in the QSL last season.
Abderrazak Hamdallah, the Saudi Pro League's third-top scorer in each of the past two seasons, is spearheading Morocco's push, Tunisia will expect big things from Naïm Sliti and former PSG youngster Ismaël Gharbi, and Egyptian hopes are being carried by Achraf Bencharki and former Arsenal man Mohamed Elneny.
