5. Precision, Speed And Very Good Ergonomics

With an average rate of six shots in 10 seconds, the Panasonic DMC-FZ18 is very fast. That impression of rapidity holds true for the camera in overall use. It starts up in no time and navigation in the menus is fluid and lively. The autofocus is precise and fast. Quickness is one of the well-known strong points of Panasonic cameras. The face detection function works well, even with several people in the shot.

Although it’s nowhere near as small as a compact point-and-shoot, the FZ18 makes up for its size with ergonomics that make everyday use easy. Thanks to its carefully-designed shape, it fits well in your hand. For the sake of simplicity, the zoom and the shutter release are close to each other and the various adjustment buttons and dials are carefully laid out on the right-hand side of the body. However, we did find them a little too small.

Another strong point of this camera is its LCD display. Aside from the possibility of toggling between the viewfinder and the LCD display with the touch of a button, we especially liked the display’s image quality. With a diagonal measurement of 2.5 inches, it’s bright and legible. And the brightness is adjustable in the menus.
