21. What's Revolutionary About It?
EOS Digital Rebel is a name that may well smack of revolution, but the revolution is mainly piecewise. Although this is an excellent camera, from the technical point of view it contributes absolutely nothing to what has already been seen (and continues to be seen) in terms of photography. All that distinguishes it from the rest is the price, even though the little Canon could be considered as a "trailblazer." With its carefully managed blaze of publicity, Canon is testing the waters. Will the EOS 300D be a big Christmas seller? Does a digital SLR camera aimed at the general public have a future? What should the pricing policy be for which cameras? These are a lot of questions to which the answers will soon be forthcoming. At any event, the true revolution symbolized by the EOS 300D is the obvious desire by manufacturers to attract the mass market to digital SLR cameras, which hitherto had been content with purchasing digital compacts. The number of items of this nature on the market is likely to multiply, much to the delight of those who like good photographs, and better and better cameras are likely to hit the market.
