If you suffer from joint pain and find that it's worse when you wake up in the morning, it could be your mattress that's responsible. Both the Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Adapt and the Purple Restore are hybrid beds that can reduce joint pain, but which should you invest in?
Tempur-Pedic and Purple make some of the best mattresses on the market, and they stand out thanks to their use of proprietary materials that you won't find in other beds. Tempur-Pedic has its own super-contouring memory foam called Tempur-Material, while Purple mattresses are enhanced with the brand's GelFlex Grid: a hyper-elastic polymer grid that cradles pressure points.
These aren't budget mattresses. At full price, both the Tempur-Adapt and Purple Restore start at $1,999, and unlike many of the most popular mattresses they're not always discounted in mattress sales, and right now they're both selling at full price. We'd advise waiting for a sale, so that give you time to think about which pressure-relieving mattress would suit you best. Here's what you need to know...
Tempur-Adapt vs Purple Restore mattress: Price & trial
- Both the Tempur-Adapt and Purple Restore start at $1,999 MSRP
- Neither mattress brand holds evergreen sales
- Purple offers a longer 100-night sleep trial
Both the Tempur-Adapt and Purple Restore are premium hybrid mattresses, and both have an MSRP of $1,999 for their smallest size. It's worth noting, though, that the smallest Tempur-Adapt is a twin, while the Purple Restore starts at twin XL. You'll get a better price comparison from the queen sizes: a queen size Tempur-Adapt has an MSRP of $2,499, while the queen at Purple is $2,399.
Naturally you'll pay less when they're on sale, but right now they're both at full price. Right now you can get a queen size Tempur-Adapt hybrid is $2,499 (but bear in mind that there's also a cheaper foam version available, with a queen currently selling for $2,199). Meanwhile at Purple the Restore is currently at full price, although it was recently reduced by $300 in all sizes
You'll get free delivery with both brands, but at Tempur-Pedic you'll get white glove delivery, which means your mattress will be delivered directly to your bed and unpacked. Both brands will give you a 10-year warranty, while Purple is the winner in terms of sleep trial: it gives you 100 nights to get to know your mattress, while Tempur-Pedic gives you 90 nights.
Tempur-Adapt Mattress: twin $1,999 at Tempur-Pedic
The Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Adapt is a luxury hybrid mattress that features three layers of foam and premium coils, and adjusts to your shape, weight and temperature to deliver exceptional pressure relief. The Tempur-Adapt isn't always on sale and there was recently $200 off all sizes, reducing the price of a queen size to $2,299, so it's probably worth waiting for this deal to return before you buy. Tempur-Pedic also offers free white glove delivery, a 90-night sleep trial and 10-year warranty.
Purple Restore Mattress: twin XL $1,999 at Purple
The GelFlex Grid in the Purple Restore instantly adapts to your body movement, cradling your pressure points to provide responsive pressure relief. It also helps dissipate heat, and combined with a layer of edge-to-edge coils it means this mattress is unlikely to leave you overheating in the night. Currently this mattress is selling at full price, but in recent Purple sales we've seen $300 off this bed, with a queen size down to $2,099, so it's worth waiting for a bit if you're tempted to buy. You'll get a 100-night sleep trial, 10 year warranty plus free shipping and returns, too.
Tempur-Adapt vs Purple Restore mattress: Materials & design
- The Purple Restore is half an inch taller than the Tempur-Adapt
- The Purple Restore features a unique GelFlex grid design
- The Tempur-Adapt has a layer of premium Tempur-Material foam
The Tempur-Adapt Hybrid is 11” tall, with a 3" top comfort layer made from Tempur-Material, the brand's own premium foam. There's a 4" layer of support foam under that, followed by a 3" layer of premium coils. The Tempur-Material in the top layer of this mattress is an excellent choice for anyone with joint pain as it has a conforming feel, and the slow responsiveness of this foam is offset by bounce provided by the layer of coils.

The Purple Restore is slightly deeper at 11.5" and the top layer is Purple's own GelFlex Grid: a proprietary material that offers cushioning comfort and support. Beneath that are layers of support foam and comfort foam; they sit on a base layer of coils that give the bed a more responsive feel as well as allowing air to flow through the mattress for cooler sleep.
Tempur-Adapt vs Purple Restore mattress: Comfort & support
- Both mattresses have a medium feel
- The Tempur-Adapt has a distinctive enveloping feel
- Both offer superior pressure relief
It's not easy to choose between the Tempur-Adapt and the Purple Restore when it comes to judging which delivers the more support. That’s because both of these hybrid mattresses feature unique materials to rival the best memory foam mattresses, and both will contour to the body, helping to keep the spine in perfect alignment, with the added bonus of springs that add a layer of responsiveness, so it's easier to move around.
The Purple Restore is suitable for all sleep styles, but side sleepers in particular will appreciate the pressure relief that comes from the mix of foam and that GelFlex Grid. The Tempur-Adapt hybrid, meanwhile, will suit most sleepers, but the enveloping feel of its Tempur-Material can make it less easy to change position in the night, so it's not so good a choice for combination sleepers.
Both mattresses come in a medium feel but the Tempur-Adapt is a little on the firmer side, and while the distinctive feel of Tempur-Material means that your curves are hugged, but without sinking feeling that you'll get with some memory foam beds.
Another great advantage with both these beds is that they provide outstanding motion isolation, which means they're an excellent option for anyone who has to but up with a restless partner. They also both do well at edges support, which means that if you like to lie close to the edge or enjoy sitting on the bed relaxing, you won't feel like you're about to fall off.
Tempur-Adapt vs Purple Restore mattress: Temperature control
- Both beds feature coils that add to overall breathability
- The Purple's GelFlex Grid has up to 2,800 open cells to help airflow
- The Tempur-Adapt has a cool-to-the-touch cover
Both the Tempur-Adapt and Purple Restore perform well when it comes to helping you stay cool in the night, but on the whole the Purple Restore does a slightly better job of regulating temperature. Its GelFlex Grid dissipates heat while the spring layer promotes airflow, both of which help keep temperatures down. The Tempur-Adapt Hybrid doesn’t have any cooling layers but its breathable layer of coils means that it sleeps considerably less hot than the all-foam options in the range.
Both of these mattresses have breathable covers, but the The Tempur-Adapt has a cool-to-the touch cover that's made with cooling fibers. Both of these covers also add to the overall luxe feel of the mattress.
