'Poor Things'

"Poor Things" stars Emma Stone as Bella Baxter, a formerly pregnant woman who jumps to her death, only to be resurrected by God (Willem Dafoe). She stays with her mad scientist father figure until one day, a mischievous lawyer Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), takes her to Lisbon to keep her away from her fiancée Max (Ramy Youssef).

This journey of self-discovery is mostly a tale of sexual awakening and loss of naïvety with just a hint of Frankenstein's monster. It's also brilliant, and one of the big winners from this year's Oscars. Stone's Best Actress-winning performance is worth watching on its own, but the rest of the movie is equally enthralling. - MM

Eventually, though, they begin a relationship as Adam decides to revisit his relationship with his own parents (Jamie Bell and Claire Foy), who died in a car crash when Adam was 12.

Despite not garnering a nomination at the 96th Oscars, let alone a win, this movie was considered one of 2023's best. The movie was praised for its examinations of love and grief, as well as Andrew Haigh's screenplay and Scott's performance.

'Suncoast'

"Suncoast" is the semi-autobiographical story of director and writer Laura Chinn's struggles as a teenager growing up with an older brother dying of brain cancer. Nico Parker stars as Doris, the stand-in for Chinn, whose brother Max (Cree Kawa) is at the Suncoast hospice center. While there, she meets Paul, who is at the hospice center protesting the decision to take Terri Schiavo, also a patient there, off life support.

As the movie progresses, Doris develops a new friend group, grows closer with Paul and drifts further from her mother Kristine (Laura Linney), all while dealing with her brother's impending demise.

In our review, we praised the movie for its emotional moments, as well as a strong second half and even stronger performances from Parker and Harrelson. Don't miss this Sundance 2024 film while it's on Hulu.

'Triangle of Sadness'

Director Ruben Östlund's 2022 Palme d'Or-winning "Triangle of Sadness" is a class-warfare drama taking place in the one place the mega-rich feel safe: a luxury yacht. Primarily, the film follows a young couple in a manipulative relationship: model Carl (Harris Dickinson) and influencer Yaya (Charlbi Dean Kriek).

And what better way to test their bond than by putting them on a cruise where everything goes wrong? Not only is The Captain (Woody Harrelson) a drunk who doesn't seem bothered by failing to uphold his duties in front of his staff, but said staff live to make their rich guests' absurd requests come true. Mixing barbed social satire with lowbrow humor, Östlund's made a winner with a film unafraid of taking itself too seriously.

'Rye Lane'

This charming romantic comedy recalls the ambling loveliness of "Before Sunrise." Two strangers have a meet-cute after getting brutally dumped. At an art gallery show, Yas (Vivian Oparah) hears Dom (David Jonsson) weeping in a bathroom stall next to her. They exchange their tales of romantic woe, then set off to walk and talk through south London’s neighborhoods.

The characters are mismatched in "Rye Lane." Yas is a free-spirited costume designer, while Dom is an uptight accountant. But the leads share a palpable chemistry and, as you know, opposites attract.

'Hellraiser'

What fresh hell is this? It’s a reboot of the horror franchise, based on the 1986 novella "The Hellbound Heart" by Clive Barker. The author adapted his own book into the 1987 now-classic movie, which generated a bunch of insipid follow-ups. Now, "Hellraiser" is reborn but just as disturbing, gory and kinky as ever.

Riley (Odessa A’zion) is a struggling, desperate recovering addict in her 20s who steals a puzzle box with her bad-influence boyfriend Trevor (Drew Starkey). While in a drug-induced haze, Riley unlocks the box and opens a portal to another dimension that’s home to the sadistic Cenobites, who derive pleasure from human pain.

'Summer of Soul'

Sly Stone performs in Summer of Soul

It's the revolution that was not televised. "Summer of Soul," Questlove's directorial debut, takes place in 1969 during the Harlem Cultural Festival — which was overshadowed by that year's other music event, Woodstock. This documentary weaves together 40 hours of never-before-seen live footage of performers including Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight, B.B. King, Ray Barretto, Nina Simone and Sly & The Family Stone.

The Harlem Cultural Festival was an electric, thrilling moment, one born of grief (Martin Luther King Jr. was shot the year before) and a celebration of the diversity, artistry and beauty of Black culture. This festival is long overdue to get even a smidgen of recognition that the other one received, but at least now we can enjoy a Summer of Soul.

'Palm Springs'

Cristin Milioti and Andy Samberg sit on floats in a pool in Palm Springs

If Groundhog's Day had put both Bill Murray and Andie Macdowell through reliving the same day over and over again, you'd get "Palm Springs." This romantic comedy stars Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti as a pair of wedding guests who find themselves waking up on the same morning — seemingly an infinite number of times. Unable to escape the venue or each other, they start to engage in increasingly outlandish behavior.

Having seen Groundhog's Day, we have a feeling about where this is all going, but Samberg and Milioti look like they have such great chemistry, we don't care if it the story is somewhat predictable.
