Heading into the championship, Wales head coach Steve Tandy would have been realistic about the challenge that lay ahead. Tasked with avoiding a third consecutive Wooden Spoon, he couldn’t have asked for two tougher opening assignments. Thumped by England 48-7 at Twickenham, he’ll now have to motivate his players for potentially an even tougher test. Without a win against France since 2019 and humbled 43-0 last year, keeping the score respectable may well be viewed as a positive.
In contrast to Wales, France are flying high after delivering a convincing 36-14 victory against Ireland at the Stade de France. The reigning Six Nations champions will have to cope without injured centre Kalvin Gourguesm, but coach Fabien Galthié has a wealth of talent to select from and has called up the equally impressive youngster Emilien Gailleton. With the likes of Louis Bielle-Biarrey, Antoine Dupont and Thomas Ramos all looking sharp against Ireland, it could be a long afternoon for the Welsh supporters inside the Principality.
