One aspect of Netflix that I appreciate is that it’s a great platform for spotlighting movies that initially flew under the radar. One such example is “Stone Cold Fox.” This action-thriller landed in theaters last November, and it’s fair to say it left relatively little impression. Heck, I saw more than 100 movies in cinemas in 2025, and I’d never even heard of this flick until now.
After being added to Netflix’s movie library last week (on January 9), “Stone Cold Fox” is already attracting plenty of attention and has earned a spot in the streaming service’s top 10 most-watched list. It currently ranks at No. 8, and could climb higher in the coming days. In fact, I’d wager more people have now watched "Stone Cold Fox" on Netflix than did last year in theaters.
I’ve now streamed “Stone Cold Fox” for myself, and while it’s no overlooked gem, I do think there’s one big reason it deserves to be in your Netflix watchlist right now, and it makes for a suitable pick if you’re looking for a breezy mid-week watch. Here’s everything you need to know.
What is ‘Stone Cold Fox’ about?
Set in the 1980s, “Stone Cold Fox centers on a rebellious young woman, appropriately named Fox (Kiernan Shipka), who finds herself running with a bad crowd. Deciding to break out of the abusive commune she previously called home, she plans to start a new life.
However, when the group’s leader, a drug-dealing queenpin named Goldie (Krysten Ritter), and Fox’s former lover, kidnaps her sister, Fox is left with little choice but to break into the place she’s just escaped from. However, standing in her way is a crooked cop (Kiefer Sutherland).
Directed by Sophie Tabet and also starring Lorenza Izzo, Jamie Chung, Karen Fukuhara and Mishel Prada, “Stone Cold Fox” is a throwback action-thriller that takes clear inspiration from the era in which it’s set. And yes, that includes its flashy synth-heavy ‘80s style soundtrack.
Should you stream ‘Stone Cold Fox’ on Netflix?
It’s perhaps not the most enthusiastic endorsement that my overriding feeling while watching “Stone Cold Fox” was “this is fine.” It’s a serviceable action thriller, with a generally compelling revenge-fueled narrative, and a likeable enough lead. Its “problem” (perhaps that word is too strong) is that there’s nothing here that elevates the movie above cheap thrills.
The off-kilter editing may be a little much for some viewers, and I could have personally done without the lead character breaking the fourth wall during a silly freeze-frame shot that robs one of the most exciting moments of its impact. Over on Rotten Tomatoes, the movie holds a 60% score, which I feel is on the money. “Stone Cold Fox” is the sort of movie that you’ll stream, largely enjoy and then probably never think about again after the credits roll.
And those credits come about surprisingly fast. Clocking in at just 85 minutes, “Stone Cold Fox” doesn’t hang around long. It’s ultra-breezy, getting to the crux of the matter without any padding whatsoever. This brevity could have been a weakness, robbing the movie of the necessary time to explore its characters to the full extent, but in this case, it’s a big plus.
Its relatively short length, it’s trimmer than several episodes of “Stranger Things” season 5, makes it very well suited for mid-week watching, when you’re craving a movie that won’t demand a significant time investment. 90-minute movies are increasingly popular, so much so that Netflix offers a whole category dedicated to them, and “Stone Cold Fox” is a great pick if you’re looking for a flick that can be consumed pretty quickly, without much fuss.
While “Stone Cold Fox” isn’t a new-to-Netflix movie that demands your immediate attention, it’s a solid time-filler and boasts solid performances from its central trio.
