Netflix just added 28 new shows and movies — here are the 5 I'd start streaming now
Here are the top picks from everything coming to Netflix today
- "The American President": 1995 rom-com that inspired "The West Wing"
- "Ex Machina": Sci-fi masterpiece from "28 Years Later: The Bone Temple" writer Alex Garland
- "Glitter & Gold: Ice Dancing": New docuseries about the road to the Olympics
- "Hell or High Water": Oscar-nominated neo-Western written by Taylor Sheridan
- "Mrs. Doubtfire": 1993 comedy classic starring Robin Williams
Netflix just added 28 new shows and movies to the streaming service today (Feb. 1). That can be a lot to sort through to start the month, and you'd be forgiven if you didn't know what to watch first. Especially since some of these are brand-new Netflix originals.
Lucky for you, I've taken a look through the entire list of everything coming to Netflix in February, and I know exactly what you should start watching today. I've picked five shows and movies to add to your watchlist, including the movie that inspired "The West Wing" TV show and a new docuseries from Netflix about the road to the 2026 Winter Olympics.
Let's dive into the five newly added to Netflix shows and movies that I think you should be streaming right now.

Malcolm has been covering the latest in streaming shows and movies since 2023. Every week, he hunts down the top shows and movies to watch on Netflix.
5 Netflix shows and movies to stream right now
'The American President' (1995)
Genre: Romantic comedy-drama
What's it about? U.S. President Andrew Shepherd (Michael Douglas) is a widower who's running the free world, and finds it to be a lonely job. So when he spots the fiery environmental lobbyist Sydney Ellen Wade (Annette Bening), he asks her to come to a state dinner as his date, and the two begin a complicated relationship.
Why you need to watch it: This rom-com is good in its own right, but its place in history comes from being the source material for "The West Wing." Both are written by Aaron Sorkin, and both star Martin Sheen in the White House. In this film, though, Sheen is White House Chief of Staff A. J. MacInerney, rather than the titular president.

'Ex Machina' (2014)
Genre: Sci-fi thriller
What's it about? This movie stars Domhnall Gleeson as Caleb. He's a programmer set to spend a week at the home of his company's CEO, Nathan Bateman (Oscar Isaac), but on his arrival, he learns his visit's true purpose: he's there to test a humanoid robot with an artificial intelligence (Alicia Vikander) and see if she can pass for human.
Why you should watch it: I love essentially anything from this movie's writer/director, Alex Garland, including this year's "28 Years Later: The Bone Temple." But "Ex Machina" might be his best work, and it's one of the best sci-fi movies of the century so far.

'Glitter & Gold: Ice Dancing'
Genre: Sports docuseries
What's it about? In "Glitter & Gold: Ice Dancing," Netflix takes you into the world of ice dancing, a sport that's as much about showmanship as it is athletic talent. The show follows several duos as they train to compete in the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics 2026, which start later this month.
Why you should watch it: While you'll need to head to Peacock to catch the actual winter games, Netflix still has you covered with Olympics content. So if you want to go behind the scenes with those hoping to secure gold, this show is for you.

'Hell or High Water' (2016)
Genre: Neo-Western crime drama
What's it about? Chris Pine and Ben Foster are two West Texas brothers who rob the Texas Midlands Bank because it's about to foreclose on their late mother's ranch. Texas Rangers Marcus Hamilton (Jeff Bridges) and Alberto Parker (Gil Birmingham) are sent to investigate, leading to a cat-and-mouse game with deadly consequences.
Why you should watch it: "Hell or High Water" is an excellent example of a modern Western, in no small part due to an Oscar-worthy script from Taylor Sheridan. The movie also features an incredible cast, including Bridges, who earned a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his portrayal of Texas Ranger Marcus Hamilton.

"Mrs. Doubtfire"
Genre: Comedy-drama
What's it about? Daniel Hillard (Robin Williams) just lost his job, his wife (Sally Field) and custody of his kids. But what he does have is acting chops. So when his ex-wife puts out an ad for a housekeeper, he creates the character Euphegenia Doubtfire, an elderly British woman, and gets hired as the nanny so he can spend time with his kids.
Why you should watch it: Improperly handled, the premise of this movie is questionable, if not downright disturbing. But with Robin Williams as the star of the film, it works, and it's hysterical. You don't want to miss the chance to watch this comedy classic.
