Netflix has no shortage of crime thrillers, but there's one coming to the streaming service next year that's almost sure to be a hit. The movie in question? "The Rip," and after watching the first trailer, I'm officially sold on this dark, tense and surprisingly action-packed movie.
It was almost a certainty that I'd be intrigued by this movie anyway. "The Rip" stars Matt Damon and Ben Affleck as a pair of Miami detectives, Lt. Dane Dumars and Det. Sgt. JD Byrne, respectively, and anytime these two work together, I'm on board, whether the movie seems potentially good or not. That trust is typically rewarded, too — see "The Last Duel," "Air," "Dogma" and (of course) "Good Will Hunting." Every time these two team up, they produce something that's at least good, and sometimes even great.
But I've now seen the trailer, and this crime thriller feels right up my alley. In this first trailer for "The Rip," Damon and Affleck are unveiled as leaders of a narcotics squad who arrive at a house on a tip that there is $300,000 in drug money. They find that $300K ... and then some. By the time they and their team, which includes Steven Yeun and Teyana Taylor, make it through the house, they find $20 million in crime-related proceeds.
Once they realize that they've landed on a veritable gold mine, they quickly start realizing that they could steal this money and nobody would know. As they debate what to do with these newfound riches, mistrust starts to build — and then people outside the unit learn that the cash is up for grabs.
That sparks a dark, tense crime thriller into an explosive action thriller, at least if the trailer is any indication. I didn't expect this movie to be quite so heavy on the action, but we get flames, hailstorms of bullets and at least one car chase. It seems that aside from Damon and Affleck's unit, other cops potentially want in on the "rip," in addition to the drug lord(s) the money belongs to in the first place. They all have weapons, meaning that whoever wants this money can fight to the death for it if they so choose. Given that there's a chance nobody in this story is the good guy, don't be shocked if that's exactly how things go down.
