Every week, I comb through the upcoming additions to Netflix to pick out the latest thriller movies heading to the streaming service. As a huge fan of the genre, I’m always on the hunt for the latest thrillers to watch, and the next seven days include a healthy trio of new options on the platform.
If you want something you can watch now, there’s a movie that I recently named “one of the best legal thrillers I’ve ever seen,” and I totally stand by that assessment. And arriving soon is a survival movie set at the summit of Mount Everest, or there’s a popcorn sci-fi action-thriller starring Scarlett Johansson. But you will have to excuse a flawed, nonsensical narrative.

I’ve been raving about “Anatomy of a Fall” since it arrived on Netflix at the start of the week, or more accurately, I’ve been recommending this fantastic legal thriller since I saw it in theaters in 2023. Almost three years and a couple of rewatches later, my appreciation for director Justine Triet’s remarkably crafted movie hasn’t waned whatsoever. It’s a gripping and intelligent feature that doesn’t offer easy answers, but it does pack a heck of a punch.
Sandra (Sandra Hüller) and Samuel (Samuel Theis) are a married couple living in a remote house in the beautiful French Alps. Right from the start, it’s clear their relationship has become turbulent, and when Samuel is found dead in the snow by their young son, Daniel (Milo Machado-Graner), the question is whether he fell from the balcony or was pushed. Sandra has to defend her innocence in court, while Daniel has to decide which version of events he believes is true. “Anatomy of a Fall” is one movie you can’t miss.

‘Everest’ (2015)
Survival thrillers are typically pretty tense to begin with, but that suspense is ratcheted up further when you know the movie is based on a true story.
That’s the case with “Everest,” a movie based on the 1996 Everest disaster in which eight climbers tragically lost their lives in one of the world’s most hostile places. This cinematic spin on the true story stars Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, Robin Wright, Emily Watson, Keira Knightley, Sam Worthington and Jake Gyllenhaal. Talk about a stacked cast list!
Opening on the morning of May 10, 1996, two expedition groups set off to reach the summit of the world’s tallest mountain. As they reach the highest point on Earth, a sudden storm hits, putting the climbers in an extremely dangerous situation. Every single decision is now life or death. With conditions worsening, the teams must endure overwhelming winds, freezing temperatures, and icy surfaces; it’s a true battle against the elements.

‘Lucy’ (2014)
You know that often-parroted theory about how humans only use 10% of their brainpower? Yeah, it’s a total myth, but 2014’s “Lucy” puts scientific realities to one side in the name of crafting a somewhat entertaining, but ironically brainless, sci-fi action-thriller. If you can tolerate its nonsensical plotting and some very awkward dialogue, you might have fun with this one. Plus, it helps that Scarlett Johansson can carry some of the weaker scripting.
Tricked by a boyfriend into delivering a briefcase containing a synthetic drug, Lucy (Johansson) is captured and forced to work as a mule, carrying the substance across borders. However, when a surgically implanted package containing the powerful chemical is absorbed into her bloodstream, she gains superhuman abilities, including telepathy, telekinesis, and an inability to feel pain. She seeks out a neurologist (Morgan Freeman) to assist her, while her former captors are in pursuit. And, yes, the movie is exactly as silly as that plot outline suggests.
