I went from always exhausted to waking up with tons of energy — these are the products I rely on to help me sleep better

I used to be someone who could fall asleep at the drop of a hat and wake up with loads of energy. But then I hit my 40s and my sleep quality and energy levels took a beating.

Falling (and staying) asleep became an ongoing battle and I was waking up every day feeling exhausted. Thankfully, as someone who writes about sleep for a living, I’ve slowly curated a toolkit of tech to help me overcome the barriers standing in my way of a good night’s sleep.

The tech I rely on to sleep better

The first step towards waking up with more energy is ensuring that you're getting enough sleep. However, in addition to sleep duration, spending enough time in deep sleep (N3) is the magic ingredient to waking up with a spring in your step.

To make sure that I'm clocking up enough time in deep sleep, I ensure I have created a cool, dark and quiet sleep space. Essentially, I'm looking to remove any of the external factors that pull me out of this particularly restorative sleep stage.

That includes my phone. I'm almost ashamed to admit how much sleep I've probably lost over my lifetime to pointless scrolling (my willpower is apparently no match for Meta).

Here's the tech in my toolkit to getting reliably great sleep night after night...

Loop Dream
Noise cancelling
Loop Dream: $49.95 at Loop Earplugs

I wear my Loop Dream earplugs every night, without fail. They're the only earplugs I've tried that comfortably fit my ear and stay in all night as well as drowning out the sound of my husband's snoring (which otherwise would be a barrier to achieving deep sleep). They are pricey, and holding out for Memorial Day next month could see you save upwards of 30% — but I think they're worth every cent even at full MSRP.

Elemind Sleep Headband
Elemind Sleep Headband: $399.99 at elemindtech.com

The Elemind headband is a wearable neurotechnology device that provides acoustic stimulation tailored to your EEG brain signals to help you fall asleep. In addition to the headband itself, the $399 cost includes an Elemind membership, which provides in-depth sleep analytics to help track and improve your rest. If I really can't sleep, this is the device I reach for — but I don't recommend the Elemind to everyone.

The tech I rely on to wake with loads of energy

Once I've crafted an environment to help me achieve the sleep I need, the path is clear to waking up with lots of energy. But have you ever wondered why sleeping for eight hours leaves you feeling groggy, for example, but you feel refreshed after a shorter time in bed?

That's probably because sleeping a full eight hours often means your alarm sounds in the middle of a sleep cycle, jerking you out of deep sleep and leaving you groggy (this is known as sleep inertia.)

To prevent this, I rely on one of the best sunrise alarm clocks to slowly draw me out of deep sleep.

A sunrise alarm clock mimics the rising sun, which then kickstarts the production of get-up-and-go hormones like serotonin and cortisol. Because even with your eyes closed, you can detect the light.

The other thing I find helps me wake up with lots of energy is sticking to a regular sleep schedule. When my brain and body know what to expert, it makes it easier to fall asleep fast and wake up feeling refreshed. To ensure I'm sticking to my schedule, it's helpful to track my sleep.

Dreamegg Sunrise 1
Wake up refreshed
Dreamegg Sunrise 1: was AU$99.99 now AU$56.99 at Amazon

The Dreamegg Sunrise 1 Alarm clock helped me wake up refreshed throughout winter, and I'm still relying on it to gently ease me out of deep sleep now that we're in spring (zero sunlight breaks through my blackout blinds). Features include both sunset and sunrise simulations (which is an excellent way to set a sleep schedule) and a library of soothing sleep sounds. It's currently down to $56.99 from $99.99, which is an impressive discount.

Amazfit Helio Ring

Amazfit Helio Ring: was $149.99 now $109.99 at Amazon

If you've got your eye on the Oura Ring 4 but don't quite have the budget, this sleep tracking ring is a reliable alternative. The sleep metrics might not be as in-depth (and there are fewer sizes and colors to choose from), but if you want to know when you're falling asleep and when you're waking up (without wearing a cumbersome watch), this budget smart ring is an excellent option. Having reviewed it, our lead tester has even sworn off tracking his sleep with a smartwatch for good.
