Shopify was down — Live updates on the Cyber Monday outage
This wasn't a test: Shopify was down.
If there's one thing we don't want to see, it's one of the biggest shopping platforms on the internet go down in the middle of the Cyber Monday rush. But that's exactly what appears to have happened with Shopify, as users flocked to Downdetector to report issues.
Shopify has acknowledged the issue on its status page, and while the company hasn't officially resolved the issue, reports have dropped to a level that makes us think it's over.
Shopify outage — live updates
It seems to be over?
While Shopify hasn't said everything is back to normal, the reports at Downdetector have dropped to just over 250, which is a pretty clear sign that this outage can be put to bed.
While it seems over, it apparently isn't...
Shopify posted another status update. And while most of the internet is acting like the outage is over (myself included), Shopify posted a status update saying, "We are continuing to investigate and apply mitigations for the current issues."
It's working for me
I help out some friends with a Shopify store and have access to the admin panel. I just tried to log in, and it's working fine for me. I can access all of the features, and it loaded at what seemed like normal speed.
Of course, this is just one piece of anecdotal evidence, but it could be a sign that things are returning to normal for shops across the internet.
Going down...
Those reports are dropping steadily, which could be a good sign for store owners who are struggling to get into their Shopify accounts.
Still working on it
"We are continuing to investigate and apply mitigations for the issues with accessing Admins and POS systems. Some merchants may also see an issue with POS checkouts, due to not being able to access POS systems. Online store checkouts are not affected," reads the latest Shopify status update.
A nice little drop
While we're certainly not out of the woods until Shopify says everything is back in order, we are seeing a nice little drop in reports, which is always exciting.
A key piece of info for shop Admins...
Important to note is that Shopify suggests remaining "logged in on any devices that are currently logged in."
Essentially, if you're able to access your store's back end, don't log out because you might not be able to get back in.
Reports leveling off
Downdetector reports for Shopify started to go down for a bit, but as more users start dealing with problems, they're starting to level off again, currently sitting at about 3,000.
Finally, an update!
Shopify posted an update on its status page, but it doesn't tell us much: "We are still investigating and applying mitigations for the admin and login issues. Please remain logged in on any devices that are currently logged in."
Here's everything that's down
As you can see from the image above, the main issue is with the Admin portion of Shopify. However, API & Mobile, Point of Sale and Support are also having problems.
POS also down
Perhaps more concerning than the Shopify backend is the fact that retail POS systems that rely on Shopify are down. This means you might find yourself in some retail settings unable to check out.
Shopify reports still high, no official update
Reports are starting to go down, but the number is still very high with more than 3,000 people coming to the popular outage reporting website to shout about their issues.
A spike at Meta
Interestingly, we're seeing reports jump for Meta-owned platforms. However, this is likely due to the connection between Spotify shops and Meta platforms and not a Meta outage by itself. Of course, we'll continue to monitor Meta and any other services for the latest.
Are shoppers affected, too?
From what I can gather, stores are still working, so this issue seems to mostly be a problem for Shopify owners who want to get into their backend to adjust prices, inventory and the like.
Obviously, this is a widespread issue that's affecting tons of people, and your mileage may vary on this. Email me at dave.leclair@futurenet.com if you're experiencing any issues checking out from your favorite Shopify stores.
Shopify official status
Shopify has posted to its status page, saying that "Some merchants encountering error messages within their admins."
From the, the most recent update says, 'We are continuing to investigate and apply mitigations for the current issue. As noted previously, please remain logged in on any devices that are currently logged in."
Shopify outage begins
The reports have reached almost 4,000 on Downdetector, a clear indication that something is wrong with the popular shopping platform on Cyber Monday.
