Could the Awara Classic Hybrid be the best value organic mattress we've tested? My honest opinion after sleeping on it for a week
The Awara Classic Hybrid brings together the softness and pressure relief that I need as a side sleeper — all for $799 for a queen.
The Awara Classic Hybrid mattress is the brand’s mid-level bed, an upgrade from the Essential Hybrid, but not as luxurious as the Premier Hybrid.
It incorporates organic wool and latex into its hybrid build, which are features usually found in the best organic mattresses that cost upwards of $2,000 for a queen. But a queen Awara Classic Hybrid costs $799, putting it in the lower mid-range price bracket.
I’ve tested some of the best mattresses of the year, so I wanted to find out whether the Awara Classic Hybrid could really deliver all it says it can — excellent pressure relief, support no matter your sleeping position and durability — for such a reasonable price. After sleeping on this mattress for a week, I can say I’m impressed. Especially considering I swapped out my Birch Luxe mattress, which costs over $1,000 more than the Awara, and am sleeping better than ever. Here are my thoughts so far.

While the Awara Classic Hybrid has a ‘total value’ price of $1,445 for a queen, it’s never sold for more than $799. This is exceptional value for money, and we don’t really expect to see the price drop any more, even during major sales events like the upcoming Memorial Day mattress sales. For this reason, any time is a good time to shop. Plus, you’ll get industry-leading benefits like a forever warranty, free shipping and returns and a 365-night sleep trial.
The delivery was a breeze
Being a mattress tester might sound like the best job in the world, but after lugging a heavy monster of a bed around the house for an hour, it starts to feel like the worst. So, when my Awara delivery arrived, and the bed was packaged up into a medium-sized box, I was very pleased.
Awara offer free shipping, and while this doesn’t compare to the white-glove delivery service you get from some brands like Saatva, where your mattress is set up for you in your bedroom, it’s easy enough because the beds are vacuum-packed and rolled.
Once I had the box on my bed frame, I shifted the mattress out of it, positioned it correctly and then cut away the layers of plastic. It was super simple and easy.
The bed didn’t spring out of the wrapping and throw me across the room; instead, it rolled out and slowly inflated to its normal size.
"There was no new-mattress smell at all"
Awara say it should only take a few hours for the bed to expand to its full size, but can sometimes take up to 72 hours. For me, it was the former, with the Awara Classic Hybrid looking sleep-ready in just an hour.
My pet peeve (hence why I love an organic mattress) is off-gassing. This is the chemical smell caused by VOCs being released when you unbox a new mattress. It gives me a headache and seems to linger in the house for days.
But thanks to the natural materials in the Awara (like organic wool and latex), there was no new-mattress smell at all. I was happy to sleep on it straight away without risking a headache or irritated airways.
It was softer than I thought it would be
I always thought that if you opt for a latex bed, you’re going to be sleeping on a firm mattress. That’s the nature of the material. However, the Awara Classic Hybrid surprised me. While I obviously didn’t sink into the bed as you would on a foam mattress, there was a lot of ‘give’.
On my Birch Luxe Natural mattress, the surface doesn’t contour or mould around your body. It keeps you elevated and doesn’t really give much at all beneath you.
On the Awara Classic Hybrid, I remained ‘on top’ of the mattress, but the whole bed was much more responsive to my body. As a side sleeper, this is a big win because pressure wasn’t building up in my hips and shoulders like it can with a firmer bed.
To be clear, it’s still not a ‘soft’ mattress, but it’s the softest latex bed I’ve tested so far. I’d say it’s probably around a 6.5 to 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale.
But because of this unique feeling and robust support from the hybrid design, the Awara Classic will suit most sleeping positions and could even be in the running for being one of the best mattresses for side sleepers.
It’s fantastic for couples
My husband and I have completely different sleep schedules. I love an early night and an early morning. He, on the other hand, is a complete night owl who’s most productive at 2.a.m. This means he usually comes to bed a long time after I’ve fallen asleep.
"I’ve been sleeping right up to the edge of the bed and have even occasionally forgotten my husband is on the other side"
On a mattress where you can feel a lot of movement, this is a problem. The action of him getting in and out of bed can be enough to wake me up and disturb my sleep.
But despite latex being known for its bouncy feel, this bed isolates motion well — stopping it from traveling from one side of the bed to the other. This is likely due to the individually wrapped coils, which help stop the transfer of movement.
The Awara Classic Hybrid also has Thick Gauge Edge Support perimeter coils. This means that the edges of the bed are designed to remain as supportive as the middle.
And it shows. The surface of the mattress feels bigger because there is so much ‘sleepable’ space. In fact, I’ve been sleeping right up to the edge of the bed and have even occasionally forgotten my husband is on the other side.
My verdict on the Awara Classic Hybrid so far
I’ve still got two weeks left until I write my full review of the Awara Classic Hybrid, but so far, I’m thoroughly impressed. Considering organic mattresses are notoriously expensive (because of the higher cost of natural materials), I was doubtful of the Awara Classic’s performance.
But so far, I’ve been able to get comfortable straight away (without any annoying breaking-in period), sleep through the night and wake up without any aches and pains. It could even rival some of the best hybrid mattresses I've tested.
Plus, my fussy husband loves it. The previous memory foam beds we’ve tried have all felt too soft and marshmallow-like for us both. But the Awara Classic Hybrid brings together the softness and pressure relief that I need as a side sleeper with the robust support of latex. So far, it’s a winning combination for a very reasonable price.
