IKEA's new motion-controlled smart light can be installed 'anywhere' — and the price is incredible

IKEA is making a name for itself in the smart home world and its next product looks set to continue that momentum. The Ankarlägg smart light is a motion-activated adhesive light you can place anywhere. And although it's not yet available in the U.S., it's sure to come with a price that puts other smart lights to shame.

If you want a simple way to illuminate a hallway, light up the corners of a garage or just brighten up your office during the winter, the Ankarlägg could fit the bill. The bulb doesn't need any smart home hub to work and runs on batteries — no wiring needed. It's got a self-adhesive back so you can mount it on any flat surface.

This light is meant to be versatile; you could even pick up a couple and have them waiting inside your cupboard for you.

Of course, this is IKEA so the pricing should be on the friendly side. At present, IKEA has launched the light in Europe with a price of just €2.99 on the retailer's French site. The site reads: "This light can be installed anywhere because it runs on batteries and requires no wiring: in the entryway, the bedroom, the staircase, or even in a closet or wardrobe."

If (or rather, when) this comes to the United States, I'd be willing to bet it'll cost around $7 in line with IKEA's international pricing. That's a fair lot less than you'd pay for a typical smart light and motion sensor.

Six months of battery

IKEA says the Ankarlägg smart light has a battery life of six months if it's triggered 10 times per day. It can detect motion up to 10 feet away and to conserve power, the light will switch off if no motion is detected for 30 seconds.

Unlike some other IKEA smart home products, this light shouldn't need to be connected to any kind of hub. Making it about as plug-and-play as it's possible to get. It might not be as fun as IKEA's iconic donut lamp, but this could be another big hit for the Swedish retailer.
