3 hidden YouTube settings you should change right now to protect your privacy

While most people view YouTube purely as an entertainment app, it is also one of Google's biggest engines for collecting user data and building detailed interest profiles. By default, every search you type, every video you click, and every interaction is logged and used to tailor targeted ads across your Google account.

If you prefer to keep your viewing habits private and limit unnecessary data collection, adjusting three built-in settings ensures your account remains secure.

1. Shorten your watch history auto-delete window

Whether Google stores your YouTube history indefinitely depends on when you created your account. Older accounts maintain legacy defaults that retain watch history indefinitely until adjusted manually, whereas newer accounts automatically purge YouTube activity after 36 months. However, three years is still a substantial window for detailed profiling.

To check your current status or shorten the retention period, open your Google My Activity page, select YouTube History, click Auto-delete, and select a shorter purge window like 3 or 18 months. Your video recommendations might feel a bit less tailored, but that’s a small price to pay for keeping Google out of your long-term viewing habits.

Alternatively, if you want to search for topics without affecting your account history at all, tap You (your profile icon) in the mobile app and select Turn on Incognito before browsing.

2. Verify your privacy for subscriptions and saved playlists

YouTube sets channel subscriptions to private by default for newer accounts, but if you have a legacy channel or previously toggled this setting, your subscriptions might still be public. Also, custom playlists you create remain visible unless specified.

To confirm your subscriptions are hidden on desktop (you can't do this on the mobile app at the time of writing), open Settings, select Privacy, and ensure Keep all my subscriptions private is toggled on. To hide your saved video lists, tap your profile tab, select Playlists, click on any list you have created, and set its Visibility to Private.

3. Turn off personalized advertising across Google services

YouTube uses your watch history, search queries, and inferred interests to deliver hyper-targeted commercials. While disabling personalized ads does not remove commercials entirely, it prevents Google from profiling your viewing habits to serve targeted promotions.

To turn this off in the mobile app, open Settings, select Privacy, tap My Ad Center, and switch Personalized ads to Off. This selection automatically applies across all Google services connected to your account.
