The crime thriller has evolved far beyond the classic whodunnit tropes. Today’s most compelling series prioritize atmosphere, deep psychological tension, and settings that act as characters themselves, from the sun-drenched coast of Spain to the fog-heavy streets of London.

This new wave of international noir offers a refreshing perspective on the genre, often focusing on the emotional fallout of crime rather than just the investigation. Whether you are a fan of gritty police procedurals or character-driven psychological rollercoasters, there is a deep library of global hits that often fly under the mainstream radar.

If you’re ready to dive into some of the best storytelling currently coming out of the international scene, here are three must-watch series that define the modern crime landscape.

While most of the shows on this list focus on police investigations, Spain's "The Gardener" tells its story from the perspective of the criminal himself. Alongside his mother, Elmer (Álvaro Rico) has developed a dual career as a gardener and professional hitman, thanks in large part to a childhood accident that damaged his ability to feel emotions. But when he meets Violeta (Catalina Sopelana), he feels something for the first time since he was a little boy — a fact that significantly complicates things, since she’s his next target.

'Marcella'

There’s no one more potent in the police force than an ex-retiree who’s been roped back in with something to prove. In "Marcella," the titular Marcella Backland (Anna Friel) makes the momentous decision to return to the London police after 15 years off the job. Amidst serious family upheaval, she takes on three unsolved cases that bear a terrifying resemblance to new murders being committed, leading her to believe they are all the work of the same criminal.

Set in Málaga, Spain, "The Snow Girl" tells the story of a missing girl, Amaya Martín, and the efforts to recover her after she disappears at a festival. On the case are two journalists, one an established veteran and the other a mere intern, working to figure out what happened to the girl while operating independently from the official police investigation. As the young intern Miren Rojo (Milena Smit) digs deeper into the disappearance, she is also forced to deal with her own personal trauma.
