How to watch '33 Photos from the Ghetto' online from anywhere
Zbigniew Leszek Grzywaczewski's remarkable secret images of the Warsaw ghetto uprising are the tip of the iceberg
The Warsaw ghetto uprising of 1943 is believed to have been the Second World War's biggest civilian rebellion against the Nazis. It ultimately ended in devastation, but for 29 days the doomed, starving Jewish and Romani occupants of the open-air prison fought back against the Germans with anything they could get their hands on. In December 2022, a long-forgotten reel of photographs taken from inside the ghetto during the uprising was discovered in an attic.

The images were captured by firefighter Zbigniew Leszek Grzywaczewski, who was 23 years old when he was sent to the ghetto to prevent Nazi-instigated fires — deliberately started in order to smoke the mutineers out or burnt them alive — from spreading to nearby Aryan homes and damaging German factories.
"33 Photos from the Ghetto" is a 75-minute Polish documentary that uncovers Grzywaczewski's remarkable story, and contextualizes his snapshots. They show smoke billowing from burning buildings, German Nazis posing with Polish firemen and, experts believe, men, women and children being shepherded to Umschlagplatz, to catch a train bound for the gas chambers of Treblinka.
Grzywaczewski's photographs are the only known images of the 1943 Warsaw ghetto uprising that were not captured by the Germans, and he took more than 33 of them. Even though his own son had no knowledge of the horrors that Grzywaczewski witnessed, a handful of the firefighter's pictures somehow ended up in the ownership of the Holocaust Museum in Washington D.C..
Grzywaczewski, it turns out, played a much greater role in the resistance than even his nearest and dearest knew. Read on to see how you can watch "33 Photos from the Ghetto" from anywhere.
