Forget the iPhone 20 — here's what's coming after the 'four-edge bending' display

When Apple launches the 20th-anniversary iPhone next year, it's expected to feature one of the biggest iPhone redesigns in years: an edge-to-edge display. But that wrapping screen may already be outdated by the time it debuts in 2027.

According to a new report from the Korean publication ETNews, Apple already has plans for the next-generation version of its "four-edge bending" display, which could arrive in 2028.

Multiple rumors have circulated over the past year claiming that Apple is set to introduce a screen that curves around all four edges of the iPhone 20, creating a borderless display. This would be one of the biggest design changes since the iPhone X, the 10th anniversary phone that ditched the Home button and introduced the notched display.

Per ETNews, the 20th anniversary iPhone will feature an OLED display that uses a magnesium-silver (MgAg) alloy. This configuration apparently features distortion and loss of brightness in the curved areas of the display. Allegedly, Apple is okay with this for the first iteration.

However, in 2028, a new configuration featuring indium zinc oxide (IZO) instead of MgAg will be used. IZO is supposed to be more transparent, meaning it reduces distortion and brightness less, as well as heat issues.

Both LG Display and Samsung Display are apparently already on alert for this new version and prepping investments in OLED infrastructure to develop and mass produce the second-generation screen.

What we know about the iPhone 20 so far

Beyond the curved display, the iPhone 20 should feature a number of changes that will make it quite different from current models.

That includes a move to solid-state buttons and pressure-sensing camera controls. This means it would drop mechanical buttons in favor of ones with no moving components. The buttons would register your touch and respond with haptic feedback. A similar series of rumors popped up before the iPhone 16 launch, though that did not come to fruition.

With the new display, it's been suggested that Apple will offer an under-display front camera. This is the most grain of salt of all the rumors since the feature has been rumored for every iPhone going back at least five years. That camera could be combined with under-display speakers.

Finally, one of the bigger rumors is that Apple will finally put a larger 6,000 mAh in the iPhone 20. The current iPhone 17 Pro Max features a 5,000 mAh battery that translates to 17 hours and 54 minutes in our testing. The 6,000 mAh will surely equal even longer.
