Curling, often known as “chess on ice,” is a unique Winter Olympics sport that tests both physical strength and mental sharpness. In it, players slide heavy granite stones across the ice to land as close as possible to the “house,” aka the target. This requires controlling the speed, angle, and rotation of each throw while strategically outmaneuvering opponents through well-positioned guards and takeouts.

Curling was first introduced at the inaugural 1924 Winter Olympics as a demonstration event before being officially included at the Nagano Winter Games in 1998. A curling match is played in teams of five, with each team competing over 10 rounds (known as “ends”) and throwing eight stones per end.

The team with a stone closest to the center (known as the “button”) at the end of each round scores one or more points, depending on how many stones are near the target. Mixed doubles matches consist of eight ends with five throws per team, featuring one male and one female player per side.

Canada has been the most successful nation in curling, with 12 medals (six gold, three silver, and three bronze), followed by Sweden with 11 medals (four gold, three silver, and four bronze). Don't discount Great Britain either with six medals in total, three of them gold. A total of 120 curling athletes will compete at Milano Cortina 2026, with 10 teams participating across three events: women’s, men’s, and mixed doubles.
