Vittozzi won the Big Crystal Globe for the first time in 2023–24, but had to sit the entirety of last season out with a back injury. In the Italian's absence, Franziska Preuss took top honors in dramatic fashion, gaining the lead only after Lou Jeanmonnot lost her footing on the ice in the very last race of the season.
It was the French athlete's second straight Biathlon World Cup heartbreak, and it was even more excruciating than the first. Having missed out to Vittozzi by just 23 points, she was then beaten by 20 points by Preuss. To add insult to injury, Preuss topped the overall standings despite recording fewer individual victories than Jeanmonnot. Incredibly, Jeanmonnot was also a runner-up in 2022/23, in the Under 25 competition.
Bø, an all-time legend of the sport alongside the King of Biathlon himself, Ole Einar Bjørndalen, stepped away on top in order to prioritize his family, but legions of fans — and almost certainly the Norwegian Olympic Committee — are trying to coax him back for Milano Cortina.
His compatriot Sturla Holm Laegreid, however, reigned supreme last season, securing his first Big Crystal Globe by a healthy 118-point margin over runner-up Bø. Eric Perrot, however, caught the eye in preseason, and Sebastian Samuelsson ended the 2024/25 campaign on a real high.
