Paramount+ just added 147 new movies and shows — here's the 5 I'm streaming first

Paramount+ just added 147 new movies and shows to start the month of April. That's a major uptick from the streaming service's previous monthly movie drop; last month, it added a mere 77 movies in a single day. Regardless, 147 movies are far more than enough that you probably can't watch them all in a single month, and might overwhelm you with decision paralysis.

Lucky for you, I've already looked through everything coming to Paramount+ in April, and I know exactly which of these movies are a must-watch. With all due respect to the new shows Paramount+ added, none merit bumping a movie from my shortlist. I've curated a selection of five movies to stream now, including my favorite Leonardo DiCaprio movie. I've also included a masterpiece from "Dune: Part Three" director Denis Villeneuve, and a David Fincher movie considered by some to be the best film of the 21st century, along with a few others.

5 Paramount+ movies to stream right now

'Arrival' (2016)

Genre: Sci-fi drama

What's it about? Linguist Louise Banks is tasked with the mission of a lifetime: Establishing communication with an extraterrestrial species. If she's successful, it could change humanity forever. If she fails, it could lead to war.

Why you should watch it: Despite winning just one of the eight Oscars it was nominated for (Sound Editing), this movie is considered among the best of the 2010s. It's a brilliant sci-fi story that plays with the concept of linear time and what it would be like to know one's future, in addition to tackling what it'd be like to try and communicate with an alien species.

'Catch Me If You Can' (2002)

Genre: Crime comedy-drama biopic

What's it about? "Catch Me If You Can" follows the life of real-life con man Frank Abagnale Jr. (Leonardo DiCaprio). Admittedly, it's not close to 100% accurate. But you won't care as you watch a young Leo traveling the U.S. to escape Tom Hanks, who plays Carl Hanratty, the FBI agent tasked with bringing Frank in.

Why you should watch it: I could have included "Saving Private Ryan" on this list instead; it's the better Steven Spielberg movie of the two (but not by much). But I love Leo's performance in this visually gorgeous period piece, and it holds a special place in my heart. So watch this first, and then check out Hanks and Spielberg's war epic from four years earlier once you're done.

'I Love You, Man' (2009)

Genre: Romantic comedy

What's it about? Realtor Peter Klaven (Paul Rudd) is about to get married to Zooey (Rashida Jones), but there's just one problem: He doesn't have a best man. In fact, he doesn't even have a best friend. That all changes when he strikes up an unlikely friendship with Sydney (Jason Segel), who shows up at one of Peter's open houses looking for free food and divorced singles.

Why you should watch it: Objectively, this is the worst of the movies I'm recommending this month. But subjectively, this is one of the best rom-coms of the 2000s, even though it's about a bromance. So if you're looking for something you can watch to unwind and have a good time with, "I Love You, Man" is perfect.

'Nebraska' (2013)

Genre: Comedy-drama

What's it about? Woody Grant (Bruce Dern) might be the richest man from Hawthorne, Nebraska. Or at least, that's what people think after he tells them he won $1 million in a sweepstakes. But he hasn't and his sons David and Ross (Will Forte and Bob Odenkirk) are struggling to convince the locals that they aren't entitled to these fictional winnings.

Why you should watch it: This movie isn't really about the money. It's about life's regrets, returning to a hometown where there's nothing left for you and what life can be like in a small town. The performances are incredible, the black-and-white cinematography is perfect and I felt this movie should have won Best Picture in 2013, one of the six Oscars it was nominated for.

'The Social Network'

Watch On

Genre: Biographical drama

What's it about? "The Social Network" chronicles the founding of Facebook by Harvard University students Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg) and Eduardo Saverin (Andrew Garfield). It culminates with Zuckerberg fighting lawsuits on two fronts: one from Saverin and one from the Winklevoss twins (both played by Armie Hammer), both over ownership of Facebook.

Why you should watch it: Directed by David Fincher and written by Aaron Sorkin, this movie was destined for success. But it's now considered one of the best movies of the 2010s. It is also responsible for establishing Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (Nine Inch Nails) as some of the best score composers of their generation; the duo has now won two Oscars, three Golden Globes, two Grammys and an Emmy for their work on films and shows, including winning an Oscar and Globe for this movie.
