"Virgin River" continued its tenure as Netflix's longest-running live-action scripted drama series with its recently dropped seventh season. And it looks like the beloved show will be continuing that record-breaking reign with an already announced eighth season, which means more Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge), more Jack (Martin Henderson), more Doc (Tim Matheson), more Hope (Annette O'Toole) and all the rest of your favorite small-town characters.
Netflix announced the upcoming season just days after season 7 wrapped production in July 2025: “On behalf of myself and the whole 'Virgin River' family, we’re eternally grateful to Netflix and to the fans for allowing us to continue on this journey with these beloved characters,” showrunner Patrick Sean Smith told Tudum at the time.
And as for whether or not season 8 will be the last, rest easy: Smith told Deadline in December 2024 that he has “no plans to wrap up the series anytime soon” and will continue the series for “as long as people keep coming back for it." He added: "We’re proud and happy to keep telling these stories.” With season 7 officially behind us, let's see what's coming downstream for "Virgin River" season 8 on Netflix.

There has been no official release date announcement just yet from Netflix regarding "Virgin River" season 8. However, we can use the show's prior release schedule as a hint on when fans can expect new episodes from the small-town series: The show has been pretty faithful about dropping a new season of television every single year — a rarity in this streaming era — so given that season 7 dropped in March 2026, we'll be expecting new eps sometime in spring 2027.
We do know that season 8 will consist of 10 episodes and will arrive with a four-month time jump story-wise, per Deadline. Production is slated to kick off on April 22 in Vancouver and will wrap filming in early August.
Who will be in 'Virgin River' season 8?
Again, Netflix hasn't yet made any official proclamations on who will be returning for season 8, but it's safe to say that series leads Alexandra Breckenridge and Martin Henderson will return as Mel and Jack Sheridan. Fans can also expect to see regulars like Colin Lawrence (as Preacher), Annette O’Toole (as Hope McCrea), Tim Matheson (as Doc Mullins), Sarah Dugdale (as Lizzie), Zibby Allen (as Brie Sheridan), Kai Bradbury (as Denny Cutler), Kandyse McClure (as Kaia Bryant), and Ben Hollingsworth (as Dan Brady) to also return.
It's also already been announced that Marco Grazzini (who plays Mike Valenzuela) and Lauren Hammersley (who has portrayed Jack's ex Charmaine Roberts since season 1) won't be reprising their roles for the eighth season, though they could potentially return in the future, Smith told Deadline. Also "out for now" is Rachel Drance, who played Marley, the birth mother of the baby that Jack and Mel adopted.

“For me, I’m just trying to look to the longevity of the show and making sure that the characters that we’re keeping have enough story engine in them to keep going,” the showrunner told the outlet. “So I can’t say there are any specific cast shakeups planned, but I think we will have to start to — as characters run their course — make some decisions and bring in some new blood.”
What is the plot of 'Virgin River' season 8?
As mentioned, season 8 of "Virgin River" will jump four months after the events of season 7. That means fans will get to find out the outcome of the surgery for Mel and Jack's baby, as well as the characters' journey with parenthood. “I am excited to see Mel as a mother,” Alexandra Breckenridge told Tudum. “I think we’ve anticipated that moment for far too long. It should be sweet. I’m sure it’ll be harder than she thinks it’s going to be.”
Showrunner Patrick Sean Smith added that the upcoming eps will focus on “the challenges that raising a child with special physical needs puts on their marriage and how challenging it is to be new parents, much less new parents in such a high-stakes situation.”
Speaking of medical issues, that time-jump also means fans hopefully won't have to wait long to find out the ramifications of that motorcycle accident that Brady found himself in season 7's life-or-death cliffhanger. As for Brady's fate, Smith teased to Deadline: "There could be survival, but there could be unsurvival on the other side."
Where Hope and Doc are concerned, the arrival of her ex-husband Roland (John Ralston) brought forth a complicated time for the couple, an uneasiness that will reportedly continue in season 8. “It’s not good. Doc is relegated to returning back to the clinic, which is where he was living at the beginning of the series. Hope has found herself back at Roland’s ranch, where she learns all of this interesting backstory about her father," Smith shared with Tudum. "There’s definitely a huge rift between Doc and Hope, and I think a big question in Season 8 is, ‘Will they find their way back to each other?’”
