Like all the best streaming services, HBO Max serves up a fresh batch of new additions to the platform at the start of the month. June's no different, either, as we've gotten a huge selection to choose from over the coming weeks.
However, all that choice can make choosing your next watch a real pain, so if you'd prefer a quick list of recommendations, I've got your back. Having checked our list of everything that's new on HBO Max in June 2026, I've picked out 5 things you might want to watch throughout the month.
That way, you've got a selection of things to keep you entertained while we all wait for the arrival of "House of the Dragon" season 3. Here are the five new-to-HBO Max movies I'd recommend streaming in June, alongside a rundown of all of HBO Max's early June arrivals.
What I'd stream on HBO Max this month
'Contagion' (2011)
The first movie that caught my eye in HBO Max's June lineup was "Contagion," Steven Soderbergh's tense medical thriller. It boasts an impressive ensemble, including the likes of Matt Damon, Laurence Fishburne, Kate Winslet and Jude Law, and makes for an effective, gripping watch.
"Contagion" sees members of the worldwide medical community contending with a deadly new airborne virus that can kill those infected within days. As the virus grows, they race to find a cure and combat the panic building around this rapidly growing epidemic.

'Isle of Dogs' (2018)
Love stop-motion animation, or the satisfying precision of a Wes Anderson feature? You're going to want to add "Isle of Dogs" to your watchlist.
This 2018 adventure takes us to the fictional Japanese city of Megasaki and sees all the city's dogs banished to Trash Island by the mayor. 12-year-old Atari (voiced by Koyu Rankin) heads to the island in search of his own canine bodyguard, Spots (Liev Schreiber). With the help of a pack of pooches, he embarks on a journey that just might change the fate of the entire Prefecture.

'Midsommar' (2019)
I am a total scaredy cat when it comes to horror movies, but I've been working to try and broaden my horizons in the genre, and one of the films that my TG colleagues have been trying to watch for the longest time is "Midsommar," which everyone tells me I've simply got to see. So, I'm acting on their recommendations and including it in this month's roundup, seeing as it's just landed on HBO Max.
Ari Aster's 2019 horror film sees a young couple (Florence Pugh and Jack Reynor) on the rocks heading on a trip to a remote Swedish village, but this once-in-a-lifetime getaway soon takes a turn as the visitors are invited by the locals to take part in some sinister rituals.

'Room' (2015)
Next up, there's Lenny Abrahamson's critically-acclaimed and deeply affecting 2015 drama, "Room," which Emma Donoghue adapted from her own novel and which earned Brie Larson her Best Actress win at the Oscars.
The film tells the story of Ma (Larson) and her young son, five-year-old Jack (Jacob Tremblay), who are caught in a terrible situation. They've been held captive in a 10-by-10-foot space (the "Room") for years. Ma is a devoted mother to Jack and has tried to make sure life within the Room is still fulfilling for him, but at one point, they mount a risky escape out into the real world.

'The Rock' (1996)
If you're instead in the mood for some action, I'd suggest taking a look at "The Rock." It might not be quite as well-regarded as some of the other movies on this list, but if it's over-the-top action you want, I'd definitely suggest giving this Michael Bay thriller a shot.
For the uninitiated, "The Rock" follows chemical warfare expert Stanley Goodspeed (Nicolas Cage) and former spy John Patrick Mason (Sean Connery), the only inmate to ever escape Alcatraz, on a mission to Alcatraz Island to try to prevent Gen. Francis X. Hummel (Ed Harris) from launching chemical weapons from the island into San Francisco.
