Whether or not you're concerned about so-called "forever chemicals", the conversation around non-stick coatings is only growing. And with it comes an increasing market of buyers who want the option of buying a toxin-free air fryer.
Well, with demand comes supply, and Cosori is stepping up to the plate with its new Iconic air fryer. Cosori makes some of the best air fryers we've tested, but the Iconic model is special. It ditches the conventional plastic coating for a stainless steel exterior, and its nonstick insert uses ceramic coating over the more conventional PFAS lining. What's new?
I think this stainless steel air fryer is going to be very popular, both because of its PFAS-free credentials and its chic exterior.
Of course, with stainless steel finishes, you do have to deal with the easily smudged exterior, and you're also missing out on the added benefit of a transparent viewing window, but I think this finish looks classy and would slot right alongside a Breville coffee maker or brushed stainless steel refrigerator.
Under the hood, there are six cooking functions on offer: Air Fry, Roast, Bake, Dry, Proof and Reheat. The Iconic's max temperature of 450°F is higher than alternatives from Ninja and Philips, and the glass-topped design means you'll still benefit from touch controls.
Switching to ceramic coating
Ceramic coating is a popular choice for those who want to ditch Teflon-style nonstick coating but still wish to benefit from easy cleaning. I've used ceramic-coated frying pans before, and while they don't quite match up to Teflon, they're still a durable choice without the potential risks.
Speaking of, what are the risks? Personally, I'm reluctant to ditch my air fryer purely because it's got nonstick lining. But in our article 'Is your air fryer really toxic?', we asked James LeBaigue, MSc, Head of Nutrition at Hurry The Food Up, if this was cause for concern.
“Historically, worries about toxicity seem to stem from Teflon, which was known to release harmful chemicals when overheated," he told us. "However, manufacturing techniques and legislation have improved significantly since then.”
LeBaigue went on to explain that “modern air fryers, especially those from reputable brands, use safer materials like ceramic nonstick coatings, which should not be a concern if you purchase a good-quality model.”
In addition to worries about nonstick coatings, plastic within the appliance seems to be another component causing people to worry. However, LeBaigue isn’t too concerned, stating, “plastic in air fryers is typically limited to the exterior, with food-contact parts made from safer materials like metal or ceramic-coated baskets.”

What other air fryers are PFAS free?
Released last year, Ninja's Crispi Pro air fryer also seems to be a bid for the PFAS-free air fryer market with its glass construction. It's still being reviewed by the team here at Tom's Guide, but its smaller counterpart, the Ninja Crispi, won a 4.5-star rating when I tested it last year.
Another good option is Our Place's Wonder Oven, which is compact and aesthetically pleasing to use and display in your home. With a toaster oven-style design, it's a good option if you want to opt for a stainless steel interior, too.
