Though the story is fictional, it was inspired partly by the book To Hunt a Killer, written by crime correspondent Robert Murphy and Detective Superintendent Julie Mackay about the latter's career. The pair serve as consultants for the series.

‘Gone' – Episode Guide
The series consists of six episodes, airing twice weekly on Sunday and Monday nights.
Episode 1 (8 March): Michael and his daughter return home from a school rugby match to find Sarah missing. Michael reports her disappearance to DS Annie Cassidy the following day.
Episode 2 (9 March): As the investigation intensifies, news of the disappearance spreads despite Michael’s attempts to contain it. An "awful discovery" soon shifts the investigation into new territory.
Episodes 3–6: Subsequent episodes will air every Sunday and Monday night at 9pm.
Is 'Gone' based on a true story?
No, the series is a fictional story created and written by George Kay. However, it’s partly inspired by real-life research and the book To Hunt a Killer.
The lead character, Detective Annie Cassidy (played by Eve Myles), is inspired by the career of former Detective Superintendent Julie Mackay, who solved a 32-year-old cold case in Bath. Both Mackay and crime correspondent Robert Murphy served as consultants on the show to help ensure procedural accuracy.
How many episodes are there?
The drama is a six-part series. On ITV1, episodes will air twice a week on Sunday and Monday nights.
Where was the series filmed?
The show is set and filmed entirely in Bristol and the surrounding South West region. Key filming locations include The Bottle Yard Studios, Downside School, the Forest of Dean, and Danby Lodge.
Will there be a second season?
As of March 2026, there’s been no official announcement regarding a second season. Since it’s a psychological thriller centered on a specific missing-person case, it may well be intended as a limited series.
