This time the setting is rural Oxfordshire where retired police detective Ash Smith (played by the wonderful David Thewlis) notices his local river is polluted and teams up with a neighbour, Prof. Peter Hammond (Jason Watkins), to find out why. They soon discover raw, untreated sewage is being dumped in the waterway.
Meanwhile, raw sewage on a beach in Devon is held to be responsible for the death of 8 year old Heather Preen after contracting e-coli 0157 and a chronic case of Ménière's disease afflicting a young a surfer. Why is harmful sewage being discharged without warning? Who is responsible? Is it legal?
More urgently, how can those in harm's way make it stop and those already affected seek redress? As the real-life case continues through the courts this timely drama takes in whistleblowers and the citizen investigations to shine the light on the behaviour of privatised water companies.

'Dirty Business' FAQ
What have the lead actors, David Thewlis and Jason Watkins, said about the series?
David Thewlis (Ash Smith) :“What shocked me about this story was just how much has been allowed to go unchecked — two ordinary men uncovering negligence, illegal pollution, and corporate indifference that should never have been tolerated. Being a part of this series has been a chance to channel the anger and frustration so many feel about what’s been done to our rivers and communities, and to show the courage it takes to stand up and demand accountability.”
Jason Watkins (Peter Hammond): “I wanted to make this series because of how human and grounded the story is — it’s told through ordinary people who refuse to look away when something isn’t right. 'Dirty Business' captures the quiet determination it takes to stand up to a system far bigger than the individual, and shining a light on the real human cost of environmental damage and corporate neglect felt both urgent and important to be part of.”
