Prime Video's live-action Tomb Raider adaptation has confirmed for the first time that "Game of Thrones" star Sophie Turner will be the next actress to play Lara Croft — and production on the new show is due to get underway in just a few months.

The long-gestating video game adaptation comes from "Fleabag" creator and "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny" star, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and, thanks to an update shared on the official Tomb Raider website, we now know the wheels are spinning up on Lara Croft's latest outing.

As per the announcement, we know shooting is due to get underway on January 19, 2026, and that Turner — who had been rumored for the role for some time — had finally been confirmed as the titular adventurer. She follows in the footsteps of Alicia Vikander and Angelina Jolie, who played Croft on the big screen in earlier adaptations.

"I am thrilled beyond measure to be playing Lara Croft," Turner said in a statement shared by the publication. "She's such an iconic character, who means so much to so many – and I am giving everything I’ve got.

"They’re massive shoes to fill, following in the steps of Angelina and Alicia with their powerhouse performances, but with Phoebe [Waller-Bridge, showrunner] at the helm, we (and Lara) are all in very safe hands. I can’t wait for you all to see what we have cooking," she added. (quotes via the official Tomb Raider website).

What else do we know about Prime Video's 'Tomb Raider' series right now?

Along with the above news, we've also learned that Jonathan Van Tulleken ("Shōgun", "Top Boy") has joined the show as an EP and director, while Chad Hodge ("Good Behaviour", "Wayward Pines") has joined as co-showrunner, alongside Waller-Bridge.

Little is known about what form the show will take at present. A brief logline shared simply confirms what we already know: like Prime Video's (excellent!) "Fallout" adaptation, the series is based on a video game franchise.

It reads: ""Tomb Raider" the series is based on the iconic Tomb Raider video game franchise, which follows the adventures of world-famous archaeologist and adventurer Lara Croft."

Of the show, Waller-Bridge said: “I’m so excited to announce the formidable Sophie Turner as our Lara alongside this phenomenal creative team. It’s not very often you get to make a show of this scale with a character you grew up loving. Everyone on board is wildly passionate about Lara and are all as outrageous, brave, and hilarious as she is. Get your artifacts out... Croft is coming..."

A release date has not been set yet, but with filming on the "Tomb Raider" series not getting underway until January, I wouldn't expect one anytime soon.
