Netflix is adding 14 new shows and movies to the streaming service this week. It's a lighter week than most, but it's still bringing a heavy hitter. "House of Guinness" arrives this week from the mind of Steven Knight, who created "Peaky Blinders." This drama about the world's most famous Irish beer has real "Succession" vibes, and I'm already sold after just the first trailer.

However, it's not all you need to watch this week. There are a ton of great older movies to check out, like "10 Things I Hate About You" and "Idiocracy." But there's also "Ruth & Boaz," a new movie from Tyler Perry that puts a modern twist on a biblical tale.

For more to watch, read on for all of my top picks, a full list of everything new on Netflix this week and the scoop on what's leaving Netflix this week. New on Netflix this week: Top picks

'House of Guinness'

"House of Guinness" is the latest show from "Peaky Blinders" creator Stephen Knight, and from watching the trailer, it looks like "Succession" meets "House of the Dragon." The historical drama is set in 1868, just after the death of family patriarch Sir Benjamin Guinness, who transformed his father's brewery into a titanic business. The show primarily takes place in Dublin, Ireland and focuses on the divisions within the family caused by Sir Benjamin's death as well as the Guinness family's involvement in Ireland's history of political unrest.

The show stars Anthony Boyle as Arthur Guinness and Louis Partridge as Edward Guinness. These two will run the brewing empire in accordance with Sir Benjamin's wishes, while Emily Fairn as Anne Plunket (née Guinness) and Fionn O’Shea as Benjamin Guinness are left on the outside looking in.

This is a new ongoing series, so don't expect to get the whole story of Ireland's famous brewery in just one sitting. It's also not just set in Ireland, as part of the season will take place in New York as the Guinness family looks to expand its empire.

'Ruth & Boaz'

When Tyler Perry has a new movie coming to Netflix, it's almost one of the biggest titles in a given week by default. His latest movie, "Ruth & Boaz," is a modern retelling of the biblical story.

In the Bible, Ruth and Boaz's love ultimately produces King David down the line, so it's a big deal. But, in this version of the story, Ruth (Serayah) is a young woman who has come to Tennessee to escape from the Atlanta music scene and care for an elderly widow (Phylicia Rashad). Once there, she meets Boaz (Tyler Lepley), who she discovers is the love of her life.

But before she can begin her new life, her old life comes back to haunt her. Can Ruth and Boaz make it work when everything is against them? Or will Ruth's past be too much for them to overcome? You'll have to watch "Ruth & Boaz" to see how this story ends.

'10 Things I Hate About You'

If you're of a certain age, there's a good chance you've already seen "10 Things I Hate About You." But if you've never seen this iconic '90s rom-com, now's your chance when it hits Netflix this week.

Like "Ruth & Boaz," this movie is a modern version of an old story. In this instance, it's William Shakespeare's famous comedy "The Taming of the Shrew," but set in an American high school. It stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as new student Cameron James. He's fallen hard for Bianca Stratford (Larisa Oleynik) and wants to date her. There's just one problem: Bianca's strict father and his even stricter rules on dating.

Bianca's father hits her with a bombshell when she begs him to date Cameron. If she wants to date someone, her sister Kat (Julia Stiles) first has to be dating someone. So after searching the entire school, Cameron decides to recruit resident bad boy Patrick Verona (Heath Ledger) to date Kat so Cameron can finally date Bianca. Does love work out for these crazy kids? You'll have to watch "10 Things I Hate About You" to find out.

'Idiocracy'

Watch On

"10 Things I Hate About You" is great, but if you prefer to ditch the romance and just stick strictly to the comedy, then "Idiocracy" might be more your speed. This satirical masterpiece comes from Mike Judge, the man behind the iconic animated sitcoms "Beavis and Butthead" and "King of the Hill," and while the hijinks are live-action this time, it's no less funny.

"Idiocracy" is set in a dystopian version of the year 2505, where centuries of breeding by the world's dumbest people and infertility from the world's smartest, leads to an anti-intellectual society where most people are ... well, morons.

Not United States Army librarian Joe Bauers (Luke Wilson), though. He and a prostitute, Rita (Maya Rudolph), both awaken 500 years after undergoing a government hibernation experiment, and when they come out of their centuries-long sleep, they come to discover they're now the smartest people in the world. Now, President Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho (Terry Crews) is recruiting them (mostly Joe) to fix the world's problems, and (unsurprisingly) it doesn't go smoothly.

'Alice in Borderland' season 3

Watch On

Chances are that you've heard of "Alice in Borderland" even if you've never seen it. The Japanese-language sci-fi thriller has been a massive hit for Netflix and is based on a popular manga of the same name. Set in an empty version of Tokyo parallel to the real world, it stars Kento Yamazaki as Ryōhei Arisu and Tao Tsuchiya as Yuzuha Usagi. The former is a video-game nerd, and the latter is a mountain climber, but the pair teamed up in the first season as allies, as they're forced to play in dangerous, sadistic games to survive.

In season 2, Arisu and Usagi managed to return to the real world and even found true love. They got married and built a happy life together, able to move on as their memories of the parallel "borderland" were erased ... mostly. They still see it in dreams and hallucinations.

Now, Usagi, led by afterlife researcher Ryuji (Kento Kaku), has suddenly vanished, and Banda (Hayato Isomura) has handed Arisu the final card from the borderland's sadistic game: the Joker. To save her, Arisu has to return to the parallel dimension and survive the games once more.

"Spartacus" once had a chance at being a legendary show. If the name sounds familiar to you, it's because this Starz series is based on the life of the gladiator Spartacus, who led a major slave uprising against the Roman Republic and inspired an iconic movie of the same name.

In season 1, Andy Whitfield starred as the legendary Thracian. Also known as "Spartacus: Blood and Sand," in this first season, he started as an ally of Rome, only to be betrayed and forced into servitude as a gladiator for the ludus Quintus Lentulus Batiatus (John Hannah). While there, the seeds of rebellion form, until one day Spartacus and his comrades decide to strike back against their Roman oppressors.

Unfortunately, after that, Whitfield was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, from which he never recovered. Things seemed OK at first when the prequel, "Spartacus: Gods of the Arena" (which seems likely to be listed as one of the four seasons coming to Netflix, as the mainline show only lasted three seasons), arrived to acclaim and even earned a Creative Arts Emmy nomination, but after the loss of Whitfield, things were never truly the same, even though the show remained of good quality until the end. Definitely watch it if you love a historical drama.
