Netflix subscribers are obsessed with thriller movies, and as a passionate fan of the genre myself, I’m right there with them, enjoying any movie that ramps up the stakes, tension, suspense, and intrigue. Throw in a good twist or two, and now we’re really cooking.

Whenever Netflix confirms new additions for the month ahead, I’m always on the lookout for what thriller movies are coming next. Fortunately, Netflix’s November 2025 slate isn’t disappointing. Among the various new originals, there are also fresh library titles, and in November, that includes “The Outfit,” an overlooked crime thriller released in theaters back in 2022.

Starring Mark Rylance, Zoey Deutch, and “The Maze Runner’s” Dylan O'Brien, this 1950s-set thriller tells a twisted tale of mobsters trying to sniff out a rat in their midst, and a tailor caught up in the chaos. It may not have wowed at the box office, but the reviews were strong, and having now watched it, I certainly see why viewers rate it a strong 92% on Rotten Tomatoes.

What is ‘The Outfit’ about?

Starring Academy Award winner Mark Rylance and directed by the Oscar-winning screenwriter of “The Imitation Game,” Graham Moore, “The Outfit” is a period drama that sees an English tailor in 1950s Chicago attempt to survive a very long night in the middle of a mob war.

Leonard Burling (Rylance) is a master suit-maker forced into an agreement with a ruthless mob boss, Roy Boyle (Simon Russell Beale), his son Richie (O’Brien), and his best enforcer, Francis (Johnny Flynn). Leonard’s shop acts as a stash for their ill-gotten money and a place to lie low to escape the authorities.

However, when the Boyle criminal organization suspects a rat in their fold and comes into conflict with a rival gang and the FBI, Leonard must endure a very long night as he seeks a way out of an increasingly dangerous bind.

‘The Outfit’ is a well-dressed thriller with a neat twist

It might seem strange to describe a little thriller about mobsters, murder and double-crossing as “comforting,” but between the well-realized period-setting and the almost cozy setting of Lenoard’s softly-lit tailor shop, “The Outfit” feels decidedly old-school. Fans of Rylance’s 2016 movie “Bridge of Spies” will feel right at home, as there’s definitely a similar vibe here.

This isn’t to say “The Outfit” isn’t plenty thrilling as well. One of its biggest strengths is how it's constantly raising the stakes, and they don’t exactly start out very low either. Set over a single night, Leonard is forced to endure a constantly escalating situation, from persuading his criminal overlords that he isn’t the turncoat they’re searching for to stitching up Richie after he’s shot by a rival mobster, which certainly isn’t in a tailor's job description.

Naturally, Rylance is excellent in the leading role, playing Leonard with a soft-spoken nature, but also enough authority that you know he won't go down without a fight if things come to blows. The supporting cast doesn’t quite measure up, but Zoey Deutch comes the closest as Mable, Richie’s girlfriend, who also gets caught up in the mix and has hidden secrets.

“The Outfit” doesn’t waste a moment of its runtime, with all roads leading to an exciting conclusion with a great twist. Naturally, I’m not going to spoil things here, but just know if you like your thrillers to culminate in a big reveal, you won’t be left disappointed in this case. And like all the best twists should, it all adds up in hindsight.

Deliberately small in scale, with a slim cast and a single setting (it was made on a modest $5 million budget), “The Outfit” wrings out plenty of drama and suspense from its simple components. While it might not reach the heights of more flashy thrillers, it hooks you quickly and is intelligently constructed enough to work well with what it’s got. It serves as strong evidence that you don’t need over-the-top set pieces to create a very compelling thrill ride.

You should stream ‘The Outfit’ on Netflix this weekend

“The Outfit” was warmly embraced by critics upon its release. It holds a strong 86% score on Rotten Tomatoes, which is enough for a “Certified Fresh” seal of approval.

The site’s “Critics Consensus” reads, “The Outfit isn't flashy, but a solid story and Mark Rylance's tightly tailored performance make this a comfortable fit for fans of old-school thrillers.” Meanwhile, viewers rated the crime thriller even higher at 92% calling it “excellent,” “tense,” and an overall “great flick.”

You won’t find me disagreeing with those assessments. Because of its slim setup, “The Outfit” reminds me in some ways of a stage production, which is said very much as a compliment. It’s highly dialogue-driven and focused on shifting character dynamics, with just a few flashes of gunfire to keep things spicy. It may be simple in scope, but it’s extremely satisfying throughout.

I strongly recommend you add “The Outfit” to your Netflix watchlist and give it a watch this weekend, but if you’re not completely sold on the movie, or just want to consider all your options before committing, here’s our full guide to everything new on Netflix in November 2025.
