I’ve combed through Netflix’s slate for July 2026 and picked out a trio of worthwhile thrillers deserving of a spot in your watchlist. Whether you want an awards-nominated indie movie, a biopic focused on a notorious whistleblower, or a psychological drama with one of the strongest leading performances I’ve seen in years, there’s a pick down below for you.
So, without further introduction, these are the latest thriller movies just added to Netflix; give them a watch if you’re in the mood for a movie that will have you enthralled from the start.
3 new to Netflix thrillers to watch this week
‘Zola’ (2020)
Whenever Netflix adds a movie with a high Rotten Tomatoes score, subscribers tend to take notice. With “Zola” boasting a strong 88% rating on the review aggregate website, this crime thriller with comedic elements is a recent arrival worth adding to your watchlist. Curiously, it’s actually based on a Twitter thread (now known as X), which might sound like a ludicrous source for movie inspiration, but it proves good ideas can spring from anywhere.
Earning multiple nominations at the 37th Independent Spirit Awards, including Best Film, Best Director (for Janicza Bravo) and two wins, for Best Female Lead (for Taylour Paige) and Best Editing, “Zola” sees a waitress (the eponymous Zola) invited by a customer to Florida for a weekend of partying. However, this 48-hour sun-soaked getaway quickly warps into a hedonistic odyssey of chaos involving gangsters, dimwitted boyfriends and illicit activities.

"Snowden" (2016)

“Snowden” takes viewers inside one of the 21st century’s most fascinating (and controversial) news stories. Directed by Oliver Stone, known for “Scarface” and “Midnight Express,” it takes the actions of Edward Snowden and adapts them into a tense drama. It takes a few liberties with the truth in the name of crafting an engaging thriller, but Joseph Gordon-Levitt gives a strong performance as the eponymous whistleblower, and the supporting cast is strong, including Shailene Woodley, Timothy Olyphant and Nicolas Cage.
After an intriguing opening, in which Snowden holds a clandestine meeting with a journalist, this thriller flashes back to 2004 to explore how the former CIA employee went from working within the U.S. intelligence department to leaking classified information. The movie attempts to explore Snowden’s motivation, his internal conflict over whether to turn whistleblower on his own country, and how his actions led to major reforms and a wave of public scrutiny.

‘Tár’ (2022)

Speaking of taking liberties, I’m perhaps stretching the definition of a thriller by including “Tár” in this roundup of thrillers, but I can’t not recommend this ultra-compelling and impeccably well-made psychological drama whenever I get the chance. It features Cate Blanchett at her very best, delivering a powerhouse performance that really should have seen her walk away with some Oscar gold (sadly, she had to settle for merely a nomination).
Lydia Tár (Blanchett) has the musical world under her command. She’s the respected conductor of a Berlin orchestra, holds classes at Juilliard, and is days away from a live recording of Mahler's Fifth Symphony that will elevate her career even further. Just as she’s about to achieve immortality in her field, her life begins to unravel when a serious accusation is made against her character, and her psychological state soon deteriorates.
