Summer is winding down, but HBO Max is heating up with a fresh slate of new releases to keep you entertained through September. The line-up this month includes a slew of hot new movies, including a hilarious dark comedy starring Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd and a gripping war thriller, both from A24. Plus, you can find plenty of library additions, documentaries, live sports, and more, which goes to show why HBO Max tops our list of the best streaming services.

On the TV side of things, Mark Ruffalo and Tom Pelphrey star in a new crime drama from Brad Ingelsby, the creator of “Mare of Easttown." The long-awaited miniseries promises more gritty action, riveting twists and turns, and Philly accents than you can shake a stick at.

So scroll on for my top picks for this month, plus a comprehensive list of everything new on HBO Max in September 2025. And if none of these catch your eye, be sure to check out our best movies on HBO Max round-up for even more recommendations on what to watch.

New on HBO Max in September 2025: Top picks

'Friendship'

In A24's "Friendship, "I Think You Should Leave" star Tim Robinson is an absolute treasure as Craig Waterman, a painfully awkward marketing exec with zero friends to his name. At his wife Tami’s (Kate Mara) urging, he tries to befriend his effortlessly charming new neighbor, Austin (Paul Rudd), a local weatherman with a punk band and a mustache that could warrant its own fan club.

But their casual neighborly hangouts quickly spiral into a full-on psychological meltdown in this black comedy about the quiet agony of making friends as an adult. After one disastrously uncomfortable night out with Austin’s friends, Craig finds himself iced out. Instead of walking away, he doubles down on winning back Austin’s approval, pushing his already self-destructive tendencies into overdrive. What begins as a desperate attempt at connection soon threatens to unravel both of their lives.

'Task'

The creator of “Mare of Easttown,” Brad Ingelsby, is back with a new seven-episode crime thriller miniseries. MCU star Mark Ruffalo helms a new FBI task force to track down a crew of violent, masked home invaders who've already hit nine homes in the working-class suburbs of Philadelphia.

But outside of the office, his home life is just as fraught. A widower and former priest with a drinking problem, he’s struggling to keep his family together as his troubled son faces serious charges and his two daughters clash over his future. His perspective is shown alongside the robbers, led by Tom Pelphrey in a breakout turn as Robbie, an empathetic criminal drowning in circumstances beyond his control and raising two young children with the help of his resentful niece.

Based on the trailers, "Task" seems to pack a similar gritty atmosphere and slow-burn intensity as "Mare of Easttown," balancing raw emotion with a gripping crime narrative.

'Warfare'

"Warfare" is another A24 release on HBO Max this month to look forward to. Co-created by "Civil War" director Alex Garland and Iraq War veteran Ray Mendoza, it's a gripping, boots-on-the-ground story of modern warfare that draws from the firsthand experiences of those who survived it.

"Warfare" drops viewers directly into the aftermath of the Battle of Ramadi, following a platoon of Navy SEALS on a surveillance mission gone wrong in enemy territory. Inspired by Mendoza’s own experiences, it unfolds in real time over 95 gripping minutes. The result is both a technical feat and a powerhouse of performance, and it's already earned an impressive 93% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes. So if war movies are your thing, "Warfare" seems like your next must-watch.
