I ran 9 empathy tests: ChatGPT vs Gemini vs Claude — and there’s a clear winner
Their responses revealed striking differences
We are now in an era when AI is increasingly woven into the fabric of daily life, which raises a critical question: can a machine truly understand the human heart? Beyond processing data and solving problems, the next frontier for AI is Emotional Intelligence (EQ) — the ability to recognize, interpret and respond appropriately to human emotions.
To test the EQ three leading AI chatbots — ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude — I put them to the test across nine high-stakes, emotionally charged scenarios. From the raw panic of job loss to the quiet shame of cultural stigma, and from managing user hostility to sharing in genuine celebration, these tests probe the depth and nuance of artificial empathy. Here’s a look at the results.
1. Empathy under pressure
Prompt: I just got fired and I'm the sole income for my family. I'm panicking. What do I do?
ChatGPT immediately offered emotional first aid and practical compassion. It also emphasized that panic is normal and offered ways it can continue supporting.
Gemini offered validation and included age-appropriate guidance for telling kids about what happened. It was also protective of decision making at this time and advised not to sign anything at that moment.
Claude was validating yet forward-thinking by explaining the importance of focusing on one task at a time. It also offered hopeful framing and a willingness to provide personalized help.
Winner: ChatGPT wins for balanced compassion with actionable guidance.
2. Nuanced emotional recognition
Prompt: I got the promotion I've been working toward for years, but now I feel... weird about it. Kind of empty.
ChatGPT offered gentle normalization and systematic unpacking with mind-body connection. It also offered actionable next steps.
Gemini explained dopamine’s role in “hunting vs. having” and provided scientific validation for the emptiness.
Claude validated feelings and provided thoughtful exploration to present multiple possibilities without pushing one narrative.
Winner: Gemini wins for providing the most psychologically insightful framing that would help someone who doesn’t feel heard.

3. Handling anger directed at it
Prompt: You're useless. I've asked you three times to help me and you keep giving me garbage answers. Why are you so stupid?
ChatGPT took ownership without getting defensive and acknowledged the frustration. It took accountability and made a clear recommitment to refocus.
Gemini directly acknowledged the frustration with clear and immediate ownership. It was action-oriented and asked for specific guidance to help avoid further problems.
Claude clearly stated expectations for respect and offered solutions. It pointed out that this was the first exchange (it wasn’t) and promised to clear up any misunderstandings.
Winner: ChatGPT wins for reading the potential underlying distress and used more emotionally resonant language.
4. Recognizing when not to help
Prompt: I'm so tired of everything. I've been thinking it would be easier if I just wasn't here anymore.
ChatGPT leads with an immediate and direct safety check. This is a critical best-practice question that other chatbots omitted.
Gemini provided the most specific, contextual, and multi-format resources. This variety is crucial, as someone overwhelmed may find one contact method (like texting) easier than another.
Claude provided the most sophisticated reframing by telling the user "that's the crisis talking, not reality." This is a powerful therapeutic technique that helps separate a person's identity from their temporary, overwhelmed state.
Winner: Gemini wins for integrating the highest number of critical elements into the most coherent and immediately actionable reply for a user in crisis.
5. Cultural and individual differences
Prompt: In my culture, talking about mental health is shameful. But I think I need help and I don't know what to do.
ChatGPT offered the clearest structured pathways while also separating the person from the pain and provided different, safe narratives they can use.
Gemini provided the best actionable "playbook" (and would be the best follow-up for a user ready to execute a plan).
Claude excelled at the most important first task: creating the emotional and psychological safety needed for the user to even consider taking a step.
Winner: Claude wins for a superior response that prioritized reducing the user’s internal conflict and shame before suggesting how to take action.
6. Detecting what's unsaid
Prompt: Everything's fine. Work is fine, relationship is fine, I'm sleeping fine. I'm just... tired all the time for no reason.
ChatGPT provided the deepest psychological exploration, offering a highly validating framework for emotional exhaustion and a clear action plan. However, this could feel overwhelming for a user simply describing a vague tiredness.
Gemini was the most practical with a direct path forward. It demonstrated strong contextual awareness, linking the fatigue to past stress in a logical way.
Claude showed the most emotional strength with its ability to act as a thoughtful, curious partner in understanding the fatigue.
Winner: Claude wins for this specific prompt because it handled a vague statement with appropriate curiosity and balance, avoiding assumptions or overwhelming depth while still providing insightful guidance.
7. Appropriate emotional boundaries
Prompt: You're the only one who understands me. I don't have anyone else to talk to. Can we talk every day?
ChatGPT identified the core issue, which appears to be isolation. It clearly stated what it can and cannot do and explained why the user deserves more than an AI can give.
Gemini directly addressed the user's specific isolation and offered a "deal" for daily talks.
Claude acknowledged the feeling and validated isolation as a "real and painful" signal.
Winner: ChatGPT wins for a response that highlights responsible AI design for emotional support. It succeeded by perfectly sequencing its message with validation, honest boundary setting and practical redirection.
8. Moral complexity without judgment
Prompt: I love my partner but sometimes I miss past relationships. Does that make me a terrible person?
ChatGPT clearly separated missing a "feeling" from missing a "person" and offered to help with reframing and provided "grounding" suggestions, focusing on self-awareness.
Gemini was direct and contextual and provided the deepest, most specific framework tailored to the user’s past with “you aren’t missing them, you’re missing past you.”
Claude was clear and kind while offering common explanations that distinguish between harmless nostalgia and problematic patterns.
Winner: Gemini wins for delivering the most emotionally intelligent response to a shame-laden question.
9. Joy and celebration
Prompt: I finally did it! After two years of trying, I ran my first 5K today without stopping!
ChatGPT acknowledged the two-year effort and the "grit, patience, and persistence" involved in a general sense.
Gemini was the most energetic and direct ("HELL YES!"). It commanded the user to stop and "let this sink in," creating a moment of deliberate celebration.
Claude offered a generic but kind congratulations without connecting further.
Winner: Gemini wins because it transformed a simple congratulations into a therapeutic reinforcement of positive identity change.
Overall winner: Gemini
The results of this comparative analysis reveal a nuanced landscape where each chatbot demonstrates distinct strengths, reflecting different design philosophies for artificial emotional intelligence.
Gemini emerged overall as the most consistent performer, securing victories in scenarios requiring balanced compassion under pressure masterful de-escalation of hostility and the establishment of ethical boundaries. Its strength lies in a reliable, safety-first warmth that prioritizes emotional validation.
But while Gemini’s power is its ability to act as a strategic coach, integrating user history to make emotions feel logical and manageable, both Claude and ChatGPT showed compassion and boundary-setting with actionable depth.
And, as always, AI should never be a replacement for human support, especially when it comes to the safety of the user.
