I've just discovered people are putting spatulas under their mattresses — and here's why you should too

Answer me this, why is making your bed so much effort? My bed is my sanctuary and I love curling up in it after a hard day's work. But, I feel like I'm constantly battling with tucking in corners, smoothing out sheets, and plumping up pillows. That was until I came across a pretty unconventional hack on Instagram that suggests all you need is a wooden spatula.

I'm all for turning simple household items into multi-use tools like transforming egg cartons into storage solutions or using an IKEA kid's bathroom item to boost my productivity, but this one surprised me.

How it works

TikTok creator @cindiyang has over 260k followers watching her videos where she shares life in her loft apartment from DIY tricks and tips to GRWMs. But, the one that caught my eye was splashed with the title 'Bed making tips'. Cindi says: "I wish I knew of this hack earlier in my life that using a spatula is the best tool to use for making your bed."

She adds that it's "super helpful for someone with like zero arm muscle," as she prods the bottom of her bedsheet neatly into her bed frame with ease. And it's really as simple as that. Armed with a wooden spatula for firmness, she quickly tucks in the sheets without having to use her hands or lift up the mattress at all.

Sure, some people in the comments are skeptical with quips like: "My hack is I just don't make my bed". But, with over 12 thousands views, it's a trick I was keen to look into.

Here's what happened when I tried it

I don't like to recommend a hack without giving it a go myself, so I grabbed my wooden spatula and headed for my bed. Cindi demonstrates that the bed has to be at least made first so that the sides of the sheets are hanging over the edge. Then, if you're after that really neat hotel-style look, you can tuck the sheets under the bed by pushing them in with the spatula.

And when I tried it, it was very simple. What I found really nice about it, though, was that I didn't have to lift the mattress up with my hands. I'm not always trying to achieve that tucked under look, but with a spatula in hand, I'd be a lot more likely to do it now.

Unsurprisingly, none of the images on these wooden spatulas show it being used for making a bed, but with Cindi's TikTok video in mind, a sturdy wooden spatula with some width to the top seems like the perfect option. Plus, you get two in your pack, so you can keep one for the kitchen.
