At that point, in 1977, the two women are approached by the C.I.A. who realise that the angry, suspicious and grieving widows are invisible to Soviet intelligence due to their "pony" status. Consequently, they are discretely trained in surveillance, deception and psychological manipulation and soon sent on missions.

These involve cultivating relationships with Soviet citizens and passing intelligence while maintaining the appearance of ordinary embassy life and avoiding detection by the Soviet authorities. All of which brings problems, danger and moral compromise. By the finale they have to decide to either stick (stay involved) or quit (escape).
