Good news, "Overcompensating" fans: after months of waiting, we've learned that Benito Skinner's Prime Video campus comedy-drama has been renewed for a second season! The series arrived back in May, and quickly climbed to the top spot in the streaming service's charts, and fans have doubtless been waiting to find out what's in store for Benny (Skinner) ever since.
The show's fate was confirmed yesterday (September 10) when it was confirmed that creator Benito Skinner would return to star, write, and executive produce "Overcompensating" season 2.
"I have been so overwhelmed by the insane response to the show," Skinner said in a statement, "and feel so damn lucky to go back to Yates University with Amazon MGM Studios, A24, Strong Baby, and this legendary cast for Season 2!! PLAY SUPER BASS :)" (as reported by Variety).
The renewal isn't too much of a surprise; Prime Video's Head of TV, Vernon Sanders told Deadline that a season 2 writers' room had been assembled back in July. At the time, Sanders said Amazon was "always proud of "Overcompensating"" and was "super excited" by the show's reception (it's sitting at 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, aggregated from 46 critics' reviews).
If you've not streamed the show yet, "Overcompensating" is an eight-episode, college-set ensemble comedy that follows closeted ex-football player and homecoming king, Benny (Benito Skinner).
He becomes fast friends with high school outsider Carmen (Wally Baram), and we follow the pair as they navigate all the challenges of college life, under guidance from Benny's older sister (Mary Beth Barone) and her campus-legend boyfriend (Adam DiMarco).
We don't yet know what's in store for Benny's next year at Yates University (or when it might land on Prime Video), but we can presume that it'll feature most of the same cast (based on Skinner's comments). Whether or not Charli XCX returns as a guest star in season 2 remains to be seen, though.

Martin is a Streaming Writer at Tom’s Guide, covering all things movies and TV. If it’s in the theaters or available to stream somewhere, he’s probably watched it… especially if it has a dragon in it. Before joining the team, he was a Staff Writer at What To Watch where he wrote about a broad range of shows that stretched from "Doctor Who" and "The Witcher" to "Bridgerton" and "Love Island". When he’s not watching the next must-see movie or show, he’s probably still in front of a screen playing massive RPGs, reading, spending a fortune on TCGs, or watching the NFL.
