A strong 50% discount pushes TPG’s 50GB mobile plan to the front of the pack — it's my pick of the week

It may not be the latest deal out there, but as someone who's always on the hunt for the best value SIM-only mobile plans, I keep coming back to TPG’s 50% off introductory period as arguably the best bang-for-your-buck offer you can get this week.

TPG's pricing was already very reasonable to begin with, thanks to the solid cost-to-data ratio across all three of its SIM-only plans, but when you cut those prices in half for the first 6 months, you get truly exceptional value.

TPG (50GB Medium Plan) | 50GB data | AU$17.50 p/m (first 6 months, then AU$35 p/m) | Vodafone 4G/5G network | 150Mbps speed cap

TPG has been running this excellent half-price promotion on its 50GB Medium SIM-only plan for a while now, but hey, we're not going to look a gift horse in the mouth! For the first six months, you can get 50GB of data, unlimited national calls and texts, and 100 international call minutes to 31 select countries, all for just AU$17.50 p/m. After this initial period, the plan reverts to its (still reasonable) standard price of AU$35 p/m.

Total minimum cost is AU$17.50 | Total cost for first year: AU$315, then AU$420 each year after that

However, for those willing to drop an extra tenner per month, I would absolutely recommend TPG's Large Plan from a value standpoint, priced at just AU$22.50 p/m for the first 6 months.

For starters, it offers 100GB of data per month (twice as much as the Medium Plan), which at the discounted introductory rate works out to around AU$0.22 per GB. Even after this plan goes back to its usual AU$45 p/m price point, that's only AU$0.45 per GB.

Additionally, TPG's Large Plan is also the fastest mobile plan that the telco offers. While the Medium Plan is speed capped at 150Mbps, the Large Plan has a 250Mbps limit, which can make a noticeable difference in day-to-day use.

TPG (100GB Large Plan) | 100GB data | AU$22.50 p/m (first 6 months, then AU$45 p/m) | Vodafone 4G/5G network | 250Mbps speed cap

Like the Medium Plan above, this offer has been on the table for ages, but it's still an excellent deal. TPG is offering a whopping 100GB of data per month for just AU$22.50 p/m. Of course, there's a catch — that price is only for the first 6 months, after which the price goes up to AU$45 p/m (or AU$40 p/m if you bundle it with a TPG internet plan). If that price is too rich for your blood, you can just cancel and switch to another provider or plan. Also, note this offer is only available to new connections.

Total minimum cost is AU$22.50 | Total cost per year: AU$405, then AU$540 each year after that

Whether you think TPG's 50GB Medium Plan or its 100GB Large Plan is better suited to your needs, I can confidently say that you'll be getting excellent value for money —especially if you're a new customer and can take advantage of the 50% discount during your first 6 months.

It's also worth mentioning that you can save an additional AU$5 p/m (after the introductory period) if you bundle your mobile phone plan with a TPG internet plan.

That's not to say that TPG is perfect for everyone — in my TPG mobile phone plans review, I noted that while the telco provides terrific value for money and big data allowances, its customer service reputation was far from great, and there were no real perks to speak of.

Still, if you’re on a budget and don’t mind skimping on customer support or extra perks, TPG should work just fine.
