Supergirl trailer live updates — latest news, reactions to Milly Alcock taking flight and Jason Momoa's first appearance as Lobo

... and she's pissed

In the final moments of the trailer, we get Supergirl going Super Saiyan and literally wiping the floor with a bunch of bad guys. Still no sign of Krem of the Yellow Hills though ... maybe in the next trailer.

Supergirl has arrived ...

At the 1:43 mark, we finally see Milly Alcock in the Supergirl costume. It's been over three hours of posting and live reactions, but the big moment is finally here.

Lobo has arrived

At the 1:35 mark, we finally get our first look at Jason Momoa's Lobo.

For those unfamiliar with the character, Lobo is a bounty hunter from the planet Czarnia. He dresses like a biker, rides a space motorcycle and never fails to bring in a bounty — unless you pay him more. He's undoubtedly the worst DC character ever created and has serious power-leveling issues, but he's beloved by many, so James Gunn is bringing him to the DCU.

Look, I zoomed in. I cropped, I enhanced, I did whatever I could. But this is the best image I can get you of Momoa's Lobo. Maybe next trailer we'll get a better look.

Not Krypto!

At the 1:32 mark, we get a truly upsetting sight. Something is wrong with Krypto.

Now, if you don't want spoilers, stop reading now. Don't worry, the next post will be spoiler-free.

Okay, for those of you still here, Krypto is going to be fine. At least, if "Supergirl" stays true to "Woman of Tomorrow." In the comics, Krypto was poisoned by Krem, but ultimately makes a full recovery. Most likely, that's what is happening here too.

Let's dive into what 'Supergirl' is actually about

As we see Kara and Ruthye walking along, it seems like an appropriate time to talk about what this movie is actually about.

We've already seen that Kara is a bit distraught. She's lost her home, and there's some other family stuff that I won't spoil here, but will probably come up in the movie. So she's turned to drinking as a coping mechanism, and for her 23rd birthday (it's her 21st in the original comic), she's headed to a planet with a red sun to let off steam at a local bar.

There she meets Ruthye Marye Knoll. Her father has been killed by Krem of the Yellow Hills (Matthias Schoenaerts, who we have yet to see in this trailer), and now Ruthye wants revenge. Kara, in a combination of wanting justice for Ruthye and wanting to take out her emotions on someone who deserves it, agrees to go on Ruthye's quest for vengeance.

Who the heck is this guy?

As we get a montage of Kara working over some grunts, we see the man in the image above emerge from a burning room. And I'll be honest ... I have no idea who he is.

Well, that's not entirely true. I'm guessing that he's Brute, played by Wil Coban, who is currently one of just eight official cast actors in "Supergirl" to date. That said, if he is Brute, I can't remember if Brute is in the comics or a movie invention, and I can't remember if this is what he looks like. I'm just making an educated guess.

Round 1 — fight!

As Ruthye and Kara are talking, a bunch of guys show up and point their guns at the pair. "Okay, this does not look like this is gonna end well," Kara says as she puts her hands up. "For you guys," she continues, as we then see her proceed to beat up a whole bunch of dudes.

Again, this is pulling from the "Woman of Tomorrow" comic run, where Ruthye meets Kara at a bar on a planet that orbits a red sun. Why a red sun, you ask? Because then her powers are diminished, though not totally gone. She wants to let off steam, and that requires it be a fair fight for the other guys.

Meet Ruthye

As we witness the destruction of Krypton via flashback, we get a young warrior with a sword strapped to her back telling Kara she's shocked to see a live Kryptonian.

Now, fans of the "Woman of Tomorrow" comic book will recognize this newcomer. She's Ruthye, and the comic series is largely told from her perspective, not Kara's. Obviously, that works better in a book than a movie, so it seems like we're going to have Kara take over as our main POV character for "Supergirl." Still, it's important that Ruthye is along for the ride.

Our first look at Krypton

We get a flashback now to the destruction of the planet Krypton, which is an important moment. Because, unlike her cousin Kal-El aka Superman, Kara wasn't sent off to Earth before Krypton's doom. She's had to live through the destruction of her home and her people ... which might explain all the drinking.

Nothing like going to the bar for birthday shots

Looks like another hangover is incoming, because Kara has headed to the bar (apparently with Krypto) for some 23rd birthday drinks and dancing.

No Supergirl outfit yet, but still, a comic book-inspired outfit

Kara has managed to finally shake off her hangover it seems, and has opted against the traditional Supergirl costume for a more subdued brown overcoat and googles.

But this isn't just a practical fashion choice. It's also a nod to the "Woman of Tomorrow" comics where Kara dons a similar outfit.

Another James Gunn movie, another killer soundtrack

We kick things off with Krypto hanging out with a very hungover Kara Zor-El (Milly Alcock). And while it's great to see the super pup (and pretty on brand for it to be taking a whiz), what jumps out to me first is that, yet again, we get a killer James Gunn needle drop with "Call Me" by Blondie.

Okay, now's the time to grab a drink, or a snack, or finish up whatever else you need to do: the "Supergirl" trailer's due to premiere in just a couple of minutes, and we couldn't be more excited!

What's 'Supergirl' based on?

Going into today's teaser, we already know that "Supergirl" is based on Tom King's "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow" comic run (which was illustrated by Bilquis Evely).

Back in 2024, Variety shared a brief synopsis for the movie and pitched it as "a less earnest and more edgy version of the iconic superheroine".

That synopsis reads: "Supergirl travels across the galaxy to celebrate her 21st birthday with Krypto the Superdog. Along the way, she meets a young woman named Ruthye and winds up on a murderous quest for revenge."

The wait is almost over!

James Gunn's been steadily building up the anticipation on for the "Supergirl" trailer for days now, drip-feeding info like the poster or the above brief clip he shared on X on Dec. 7

And now, we're just 15 minutes away from a real teaser trailer.

Where else have you seen 'Supergirl' star Milly Alcock before?

Aside from her delightful cameo appearance in "Superman", you'll most likely recognize our new Kara Zor-El from HBO Max's "House of the Dragon," where the star played the young incarnation of Princess Rhaenyra.

Aside from that, she's also appeared in Netflix's "Sirens" (which you should watch, as I said in my review), "Upright," "Reckoning," "The Gloaming," and more.

Who else is in 'Supergirl?'

So far, only a couple of actors have been confirmed for "Supergirl."

From what we know so far, the movie's due to feature Eve Ridley as Ruthye, Matthias Schoenaerts as the villainous Krem of the Yellow Hills, and DC star Jason Momoa as Lobo.

Back in January, THR reported that David Krumholtz and Emily Beecham were also on board, too.

What's the 'Supergirl' release date again?

It'll no doubt get mentioned in the incoming trailer, but if you need a reminder, "Supergirl" is currently slated for release on June 26, 2025.

Principal photography on the film wrapped back in May of this year, so here's hoping that the DC Studios crew has made solid progress on the movie since.
