Are Zwilling knives good?
Yes, Zwilling has been making blades for almost three centuries using the combined knowledge and forge-skill of generations of German smiths. Are Zwilling and Henckels the same company?
Zwilling and Henckels are owned by the exact same parent company, but they act as two completely distinct brands with very different levels of quality, price, and manufacturing. Zwilling is the professional-grade, premium line of knives, forged from a single piece of patented high-carbon German stainless steel that goes through a hardening process called Friodur. Almost all Zwilling knives are made in Solingen, "The City of Blades" in Germany.
Henckels, although still amazing quality for the price, is an entry-level, budget line geared toward everyday home cooks. The majority of Henckels knives are stamped rather than forged. This means the blades are essentially cut out of a large sheet of steel. They are lighter, generally lack a thick metal bolster, and will lose their sharp edge faster than the forged Zwilling lines. These knives are primarily made in China, India, Thailand, and Spain to keep costs low.
Does Zwilling own Staub
Yes, Staub is fully owned by the Zwilling Group. While Staub was originally founded as an independent family company by Francis Staub in Alsace, France, in 1974, it was bought by the German-based Zwilling Group in June 2008. Even though it is owned by Zwilling, Staub continues to operate as an independent brand, and all of Staub's famous enamelled cast-iron Dutch ovens (cocottes) are still made in their original foundry in northern France.
