Experts say these are the 6 things you should be cleaning every Saturday — here's why
I use the weekend to blitz these parts of my home
I used to clean with absolutely no schedule – and honestly, it was a bit of a nightmare. I'd forget what I'd cleaned, start to feel overwhelmed by how much there was still to do, and ultimately end up spending hours trying to do as much as possible.
Then, I started to schedule certain cleaning tasks for certain days of the week and it changed everything. Leaving just a few tasks for each day meant I knew what I was doing and once I'd done it, I'd forget about the rest of the house because I knew it was a task for another day.
In case you haven't guessed already, I seriously recommend making a cleaning schedule. But, you don't just have to take my word for it, I've also asked cleaning experts to give their advice on what's good to clean on a certain day. And for now, I'm focusing on Saturday, because Saturday is a day where you get a little bit of free time.
You might not feel like getting it done on a Saturday, but trust me, it lets you relax for the rest of the weekend in your lovely clean home, and that's worth a little time spent cleaning. Here's the six things I clean every Saturday without fail, and why.
1. The bathroom
I like to clean my bathrooms once a week, but there's something about doing it on a Saturday that really gets the weekend off to a good start.
And Carol Mehas, cleaning & laundry expert and founder of arbOUR agrees: "We deep clean our bathrooms once a week, usually on Saturday mornings after a good workout.
"Since you are already sweaty, you may as well get in some elbow grease work out all over your bathroom — and it makes for a nice, clean space for prepping for that Saturday night date night!"

Workout and then a clean? That's a double dose of productivity that I can get onboard with. Plus, you can spend the rest of the weekend being lazy and knowing you've already achieved a lot.
2. Kitchen countertops
Now, while I like to give my kitchen countertops a quick wipe down daily after preparing food or making some sort of mess, Saturday is a great time for a deeper clean.
For this, I take everything off the surfaces and make sure I'm getting in all the hidden spots that might be forgotten about during the week. The kitchen gets more use over the weekend, so it's a lovely time to ensure it's clean ahead of any cooking and/or entertaining.
But, don't overly stress about getting it as clean as possible. Chris Willatt, owner of Alpine Maids, says it's about making a cleaning schedule that works for you:
"A cleaning schedule is a suggested path, and some areas are harder to clean than you projected. Never be afraid to take a break." You don't have to tell me twice.
3. Mop and sweep the floors
When it comes to cleaning everyday, Willatt also suggests cleaning top to bottom. So, when it comes round to Saturday, he says it's a good time to be focused on the lower points of the home like the floors:
"If you clean the lower points of your home before the higher ones, you'll have to re-clean your floors and tables, because the dust and grime you clean from your ceiling will fall right onto the lower surfaces."
And you don't want to clean a surface more than once, right? I'm a big advocate for this method because it's also a really great visual way of knowing what to clean in your home.
The week has started, so as Willatt explains it's time to do the ceiling fans and countertops, then later in the week it's wiping down walls and floorboards, and by the time it's the weekend, it's time to mop and sweep your floors.
4. Entryway
I'm not sure about your home, but during the week, my entryway is incredibly busy. Shoes are constantly going on and off, people are coming in and out, and general chaos of making sure everyone gets where they need to be on time. Work, school and after-school activities mean that the entryway is a place for purpose during the weekdays.
Then, when it gets to the weekend and we're all slowing down the pace. And this presents itself as the perfect time to give your entryway a tidy up and vacuum ready for the week ahead. If you try and tackle this one on a weekday, you might get disheartened by how messy it gets the very next day.
This is an especially important one for Saturdays in the winter months when shoes are getting dirtier and we're all wearing a lot more coats, hats, scarves and gloves that need extra organizing.
5. The refrigerator
Elena Navarro, cleaning expert and professional organizer at Sparkly Maid Austin is a big advocate for Saturday being the time to: "choose a wildcard area to quickly clean such as the entryway or refrigerator."
And while we've already tackled the entryway, it's the refrigerator that I, like Elena, turn to on a Saturday. Why? Well, more often than not I'll be picking up my groceries on the weekend, or at the start of the week. So, cleaning out old food, giving the shelves a wipe down, and generally refreshing the refrigerator is a task worth tackling before you fill up the refrigerator again.
Also, I don't want to tackle a big cleaning job on my weekend because I'm trying to relax. So, as Elena recommends, it's all about keeping the jobs small: "Limit the amount of time spend on each days' task to 15-20 minutes and use a timer to limit how long you clean to avoid expanding."
6. Bedsheets
Finally, while I don't tackle the bedrooms on a Saturday, I do change the bedsheets. As I've learned, there's nothing better than getting into a clean bed on a weekend when you've got more chance of having a lie-in.
It's a simple job, but one that can be easily put off if you forget when exactly you last changed them. While Carol suggests that bedsheets should be changed weekly, or even, she says: "Pillow cases two times a week if you are sick, using overnight hair or face masks, or are a 'sweaty sleeper'".
If I tell myself bedsheets get changed on a Saturday, it's an easy one to remember each week and one that helps you relax on the weekend. After all, it's important to clean, but it's also very important to prioritize rest afterwards.
