New TV this week includes 'Only Murders in the Building' and the Emmys

The first wave of fall TV is here with a batch of new shows premiering on Netflix, Hulu, and other streaming services, as well as cable and broadcast channels. "Only Murders in the Building" returns for a fifth season of more twists, laughs and true-crime obsession, while psychological thriller "The Girlfriend" brings dark intrigue to a seemingly perfect family.
Meanwhile, the 77th Emmy Awards shine a spotlight on the year’s standout shows and performances, from "Severance" and "The Pitt" to "Adolescence" and "The Studio." Here are our top picks for new TV shows to watch this week.
‘Only Murders in the Building’ season 5 (Hulu)
A mystery is afoot once again in the Arconia. Season 5 finds Charles, Oliver and Mabel investigating the shocking death of their beloved doorman, Lester, whose “accident” seems anything but.
The hunt takes them from Staten Island mobsters to billionaires pulling strings in Manhattan’s shadows, while Oliver wrestles with long-distance marriage to Loretta (Meryl Streep) and advice from a chic tastemaker (Renée Zellweger). With Dianne Wiest as Lester’s widow and guest stars including Christoph Waltz, Téa Leoni, Bobby Cannavale and Keegan-Michael Key, expect more of the show’s signature murderous fun.
Episodes 1-3 premiere Tuesday, Sept. 9 at 12 a.m. ET on Hulu
‘The Girlfriend’ (Prime Video)
Family drama takes a deliciously dark turn in this new thriller directed by and starring Robin Wright. She plays Laura, a woman who seems to have it all — a thriving career, a devoted husband and her beloved son, Daniel (Laurie Davidson). But when Daniel introduces his new girlfriend Cherry (Olivia Cooke), Laura’s perfect world starts to crack.
Is Cherry the cunning social climber Laura suspects, or are Laura’s suspicions spiraling into obsession? The shifting perspectives will keep you guessing as to who’s really pulling the strings.

‘Beauty in Black’ season 2 (Netflix)
Tyler Perry’s drama turns up the heat in season 2 now that Chicago dancer-turned-newlywed Kimmie (Taylor Polidore Williams) has gone from hustling for tips to running the Bellarie empire. Horace Bellarie’s shocking hospital-bed marriage may have secured her the family fortune, but it’s also painted a giant target on her back.
Exes, spoiled heirs, scheming in-laws and even old flames are circling, ready to take her down. But underestimate Kimmie at your own risk; she’s got the Bellarie name now, and this HBIC not afraid to wield it.
All 8 episodes premiere Thursday, Sept. 11 at 3 a.m. ET on Netflix
‘77th Emmy Awards’
Television’s biggest night is back and the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards promise a showdown of prestige and buzz. Apple’s “Severance” leads all contenders with a staggering 27 nominations, setting the pace in drama against “The White Lotus” and “The Pitt.”
On the comedy side, newcomer “The Studio” made history with 23 nods and will head-to-head with “The Bear,” “Hacks” and “Abbott Elementary. In limited series, Netflix’s “Adolescence” looks like a surefire winner. The ceremony will be hosted by comedian Nate Bargatze, adding his signature wit to the evening.
Special airs Sunday, Sept. 14 at 8 p.m. ET on CBS and Paramount Plus
‘Doc’ season 2 (Fox)
Fox’s medical drama proved to be just what the doctor ordered last season, so it’s back with a bigger prescription: a full 22-episode run. Molly Parker’s Dr. Amy Larsen is still piecing together eight missing years of her life while juggling a messy love triangle, a wrecked career and the fact that her ex-husband is now her boss.
Enter Felicity Huffman as Dr. Joan Ridley, a mentor-turned-power player whose motives are murkier than Amy’s memory. This season, Larsen has to decide if she’s fighting to get her old life back — or to build a new one.
Episode 1 premieres Sunday, Sept. 14 at 8 p.m. ET on Fox (via Sling or Fubo) and next day on Hulu
