But the streamer also has a newer addition in its top 10 that fits the spirit of the season in a different way: the Swedish sci-fi flick “Watch the Skies.”
Originally titled “UFO Sweden” in its native country, this sci-fi adventure is actually the first feature movie visually dubbed entirely with AI. That process allowed the cast to re-record their lines in English while AI technology synced their faces perfectly to the new audio. This innovation made it possible to release the movie worldwide in theaters without losing the authenticity of the original performances. In 1990s Sweden, rebellious teenager Denise (Inez Dahl Torhaug) has grown up in foster care after her father — a passionate ufologist — mysteriously vanished years earlier. Convinced he was not simply gone but abducted by aliens, she seizes on a strange event: Her father’s old red car plummets from the sky and crashes into a barn.
That discovery drives her to enlist the help of the quirky members of the local UFO-investigation group, UFO Sweden. Denise’s search for her father’s fate soon spirals into something much bigger, as she and her companions uncover lost evidence and chase down baffling events from the past.
Should you stream ‘Watch the Skies’ on Prime Video?
“Watch the Skies” wears its “Stranger Things” admiration on its sleeve, yet it manages to deliver a heartfelt and grounded family sci-fi adventure. Much of the movie’s energy comes from the sense of mystery at its core, which is a quality the filmmakers intentionally embraced. Director Victor Danell, who lived near the Archives for the Unexplained, reached out to them and to UFO‑Sverige, which sparked the idea for a sci-fi story built around the unknown.
The movie is packed with exciting twists that keep the story constantly engaging. Just when Denise and her friends seem to be closing in on answers, a new complication or unexpected detail sends their investigation in a different direction. The story’s vibrancy and fun are amplified by a cast whose committed performances lift a script that occasionally leans on familiar beats.
Even knowing that “Watch the Skies” is visually dubbed with AI (making subtle differences in the characters’ mouth movements noticeable), the story and its sense of wonder are compelling enough to keep you fully invested.
“Watch the Skies” is a treat for anyone who loves the adventurous spirit of early Spielberg or the mystery-driven work of J.J. Abrams. It features alien spacecraft, a palpable sense of wonder about what exists beyond our world, and a visual style rich with atmospheric lighting and striking lens effects. Saying it’s colorful would be an understatement.
I’m not alone in my praise either: “Watch the Skies” holds a solid 78% on Rotten Tomatoes, with audiences giving it a similarly positive score of 72%. Andrew Parker from The Gate echoes the vast majority of critics: “A delightfully charming throwback to the high concept, family-friendly sci-fi adventures of the 80s and 90s, [Watch the Skies] dazzles with good humour and big emotions.”
