‘Nobody’ (2021)

Starting off strong, we have a lean action-thriller that subverts the traditional unstoppable action hero trope. Instead, the movie follows an exhausted, mundane suburban family man who takes plenty of damage, with the choreography favoring the messy and desperate nature of a street fight rather than slick “John Wick”-style combat. Produced on a modest $16 million budget, the film became a major box office success, effectively launching an unexpected new franchise.

“Nobody” follows Hutch Mansell (Bob Odenkirk), an ordinary suburban father and husband who lives a quiet, repetitive life while being overlooked by almost everyone around him. After a home invasion leaves his family disappointed in how he handled the situation, Hutch’s buried past begins to resurface. His attempt to set things right soon sparks a dangerous battle against a ruthless Russian gangster, Yulian Kuznetsov (Aleksei Serebryakov).

Romantic comedy fans will want to stream “Emma,” a highly stylized and visually lavish period film that serves as a fresh modern adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic novel. The movie marks the feature directorial debut of Autumn de Wilde, a celebrated rock photographer and music video director. Thanks to her strong background in high-fashion photography, “Emma” earned two Academy Award nominations for its immaculate costume and production design, resulting in a film that feels both aesthetically striking and authentically period-accurate.

Emma Woodhouse (Anya Taylor-Joy) is a wealthy and confident young woman living in Regency-era England who spends much of her time arranging relationships for the people around her. Believing she has a talent for matchmaking, Emma becomes heavily involved in the romantic lives of her friends and neighbors, often causing misunderstandings and awkward complications along the way. As new visitors arrive in town, Emma’s carefully planned schemes start to unravel.

‘Belfast’ (2021)

A deeply personal, crowd-pleasing historical drama worth watching is “Belfast.” The film was born directly out of the COVID-19 lockdown, which prompted director Kenneth Branagh to reflect on his own upbringing. It’s an unapologetically nostalgic, sentimental, and tender drama accompanied by a soulful soundtrack featuring the music of Belfast native Van Morrison. What’s most interesting about this movie, though, is that it focuses more on family strength, community ties, and the sadness of having to leave a place you love, rather than the harsh political situation around it.

“Belfast” is set in Northern Ireland in 1969 and centers around nine-year-old Buddy (Jude Hill), a working-class boy growing up in a close-knit Belfast neighbourhood with his parents, older brother, and grandparents. His days are filled with school, friendships, and time on the streets, while his family tries to maintain a stable home life as unrest begins to spread across the city. The family is soon forced to make difficult decisions about their future, weighing whether to remain in the place they know or leave in search of safety and stability elsewhere.

‘Stillwater’ (2021)

Matt Damon has an overlooked crime thriller you (probably) haven’t seen: “Stillwater.” It’s essentially a character study disguised as a crime procedural, with Damon playing a flawed man completely out of his depth. The film runs an uncommonly languid 140 minutes and is structurally split into two distinct tones. The first and final acts play like a gritty, downbeat amateur-detective noir, while the middle section takes a detour, pausing the thriller plot to become a gentle, domestic drama.

Bill Baker is an unemployed oil-rig worker from Oklahoma who travels to Marseille, France, to visit his estranged daughter Allison (Abigail Breslin), who is in prison for a murder she claims she did not commit. After she gives him a letter suggesting a possible new lead in her case, Bill decides to stay in France and look into it himself. Struggling with the language, culture, and legal system, he begins building a life there while following clues that could help prove her innocence.

‘The Invisible Man’ (2020)

Lastly, we have a critically acclaimed dark thriller written and directed by Leigh Whannell, who helmed 2025’s horror flick “Wolf Man.” Historically, “The Invisible Man” stories have focused on the invisible person becoming a mad scientist or a chaotic villain. Whannell completely flipped the perspective, shifting the spotlight entirely to the person being stalked. This film is considered one of the smartest, most effective monster reboots ever made, proving that the scariest thing in a horror movie is often what you can't see.

“The Invisible Man” follows Cecilia Kass (Elisabeth Moss), who escapes an abusive relationship with wealthy optics engineer Adrian Griffin (Oliver Jackson-Cohen). After his apparent suicide, she begins rebuilding her life while staying with a friend and his daughter. However, strange events start happening around her, and she becomes convinced Adrian has found a way to make himself invisible and is still controlling her life from the shadows. Cecilia tries to prove what’s happening, but no one believes her.
