'Landman' season 2's explosive new trailer reveals more of Billy Bob Thornton and Sam Elliott's relationship

"Landman" season 2 is one of the hottest shows of the fall. Taylor Sheridan's drama about Texas oil country was a breakout hit last year, and back in March, it was officially renewed for a second season. Now, after August's teaser trailer and release date reveal, we finally got the first official full-length trailer for "Landman" season 2, and it looks explosive.

In the trailer, we get a full layout of the stakes for season 2, and things seemingly pick up not long after the season 1 finale. Tommy Norris (Billy Bob Thornton) is still trying to run and maybe even sell his late friend Monty Miller's (Jon Hamm) oil company, which is now owned by Monty's widow Cami (Demi Moore). It looks set to be a long, bloody process, both in the oil fields and in the boardroom.

But Tommy's not the only Norris in the oil business. His son Cooper (Jacob Lofland) is striking out on his own, and as we see in the trailer, Cooper's new endeavour isn't without its own drama. Especially when one of his oil wells appears to erupt, leading his partner Ariana (Paulina Chavez) to fear the worst.

'Landman' season 2 trailer teases family drama with Billy Bob Thornton and Sam Elliott

Cooper may be following in his father's footsteps, but he's not the only Norris that could have a major impact on season 2. This season introduces Sam Elliott as T.L., who was revealed to be Tommy's father in the official teaser trailer Paramount dropped back in September. In that trailer, we hear Tommy call T.L. "Pop," finally revealing the true nature of Elliott's previously unknown character.

In this new trailer, we learn a bit more about the relationship between Tommy and T.L. The latter is heard telling the former via voiceover that he's wasted the past several decades of his life, while we watch him punch a man in the face in an arena (possibly a cattle auction or rodeo?). That leads Tommy to respond, "We've avoided telling each other the truth for a long time. Let's not start now."

Then there's the synopsis. "In Season Two," Paramount writes, "as oil rises from the earth, so do secrets – and Tommy Norris’s (Thornton) breaking point may be closer than he realizes. Facing mounting pressure from M-Tex Oil, Cami Miller (Moore), and the shadow of his kin, survival in West Texas isn’t noble – it’s brutal. And sooner or later something’s got to break."

It's that "shadow of his kin" line that has my eyebrow raised. The only Norris family we know of aside from Tommy and Cooper are Tommy's ex-wife/current partner, Angela (Ali Larter), their daughter, Ainsley (Michelle Randolph), and the now Elliott's T.L. Based on that information, and what we glean from the trailer, it seems logical that T.L. is the "kin" referred to in the official synopsis, and that hints at major drama between father and son.

We won't have to wait much longer to find out if my theory is right or not, though. "Landman" season 2 premieres Sunday, Nov. 16, exclusively on Paramount Plus — the streaming service, not the Paramount Network. This will be a global premiere, excluding Japan, which Paramount says will "follow at a later date."
