Netflix just added one of Gerard Butler’s best action-thriller movies — and it’s perfect for fans of ‘Law Abiding Citizen’
‘Copshop’ has made its grand return to Netflix
As part of all the new shows and movies coming to Netflix in February 2026, the streaming service has added the 2021 action-thriller “Copshop” to its movie library. So far, so normal. But what’s particularly curious about this movie starring Gerard Butler is that it’s branded as a “Netflix Original” and its arrival on the streaming service this week does not mark its debut on the world’s biggest at-home entertainment platform.
I’m not entirely sure why “Copshop” was previously removed from the Netflix library; that’s not information the streamer has made public. However, what I do know is that its return should be welcomed. For starters, action thrillers are always popular with Netflix subscribers, and having watched “Copshop,” I can confirm this is a pretty good one.
I suspect fans of Butler’s 2009 thriller “Law Abiding Citizen” will get a real kick out of “Copshop” because the movies share a similar gritty aesthetic and both are plenty violent. Both flicks also do a surprisingly good job of making you feel some sympathy for characters who are quite morally questionable. Here’s what you need to know about “Copshop.”
What is ‘Copshop’ about?
Teddy Murretto (Frank Grillo) is a con man on the run in a unmarked police car covered in bullet holes. Breaking down outside a small Nevada town, he sucker punches a young cop, Valerie Young (Alexis Louder). But this was not a random act of violence against an officer just doing their job. Murretto wants to be arrested and locked up for his own protection.
Murretto is being hunted by Bob Viddick (Gerard Butler), a ruthless hitman, and believes being behind bars might just keep him safe for now. What Murretto didn’t count on was Viddick getting himself thrown in jail, bringing the two face-to-face with just metal bars between them.
Caught in the middle of their conflict is Officer Young, and soon enough, the police station becomes an intense battleground where the line between criminal and cop is extremely blurry.
Should you stream ‘Copshop’ on Netflix?
There’s plenty to like about “Copshop.” For starters, the frantic pacing is a real strength. The movie wastes little time getting into the meat of the narrative, and the dynamic between its core cast shifts rapidly. The bullets start flying before you’ve even had time to commit character names to memory. And as far as I’m concerned, that’s a wise move.

Gerard Butler is often cast as the hero of the piece in his stable of action-thriller movies (even in “Law Abiding Citizen,” his revenge-fueled character is the one you root for), but he has a complete blast playing an unhinged assassin in “Copshop.” Frank Grillo offers a more sympathetic foil, even if he’s ultimately a criminal himself. However, the real hero of the movie is Louder’s Young, who is caught up in the fray, not knowing who to trust.
Trust, or the lack of it, is a major component of “Copshop.” Murretto and Viddick might be locked up, but there are villains on both sides of the bars, and when another hitman is thrown into the mix (played with a delicious, sadistic streak by Toby Huss), the stakes only increase. And I’ve not even touched on the many crooked cops acting on their own corrupt agenda.
The bombastic finale doesn’t quite match the compelling intrigue of its more dialogue-driven first half. It’s a lot more fun trying to guess who’s going to come out on top between Murretto and Viddick than actually seeing the results play out. Nevertheless, for those craving an explosive (and fiery) conclusion, you’ll get exactly that in “Copshop." I just wish the resolution of each character's arc weren’t quite so obviously predictable.
Need further convincing that “Copshop” is worth adding to your Netflix watchlist? I’m not alone in having a blast with this action thriller. On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie holds a strong 83% score from more than 110 reviews.
The site’s "Critics Consensus" reads, “It doesn't add many new ingredients to the genre, but action fans in the mood for an old-school thriller will be happy to buy what 'Copshop' is selling.” That summary echoes my feelings.
However, if you want to consider all your options before committing to “Copshop,” here’s a guide to everything new on Netflix February 2026, which includes a whole load of fresh movie options as the streaming service always kicks off a new month by adding dozens of flicks.
