There's a good reason Sony has left the WH-1000XM4 noise-canceling headphones on shelves, even though it's released two new models in the time since their initial launch. They're a top-notch pair of headphones that — some would say — are worth picking up over their more recently released siblings.

They're also much cheaper, especially thanks to deals like this. You can get the Sony WH-1000XM4 for $198 at Amazon thanks to a $150 discount. That brings them down to their lowest price ever, and makes them less than half the price of the newest WH-1000XM6.

The Sony WH-1000XM4 might not be as new as the XM5, but they make a very compelling case for your cash. They're very comfortable, and the ANC keeps out the noise of the office or library out when you're trying to work. 30 hours of battery life was good when they came oiut, and it's good now — they're a flagship headphone for a non-flagship price.

The WH-1000XM4 were a faithful friend to me throughout the length of my Master's degree. I needed quiet while I tackled my assignments, and the ANC inside the XM4 gave me just that. I couldn't hear anything around me while I listened to music and wrote scripts. A whole lot easier to concentrate, that's for sure.

It has been bettered by the newer models now, but it remains very good. My pair now resides with my sister, who uses them to block out the sound of the bus when she goes to work — they're still going strong.

What, controversially, hasn't been bettered is the sound quality. The XM5 weren't a massive step up over the XM4, and the XM6 have shifted focus to vocals for sound quality that is "different" rather than "better." The XM4 are a bassy pair of headphones, but the bass is nicely defined and well-rounded. The detail is good, and the mids are lovely and warm.

They were our choice for the best noise-canceling headphones for a long time, only unseated when the new versions launched with improved ANC. Still, the XM4s are an excellent headphone option, especially when you get them for deal prices like this. $198 feels like daylight robbery.
